So for a few months now it has been a fight to get Everett to eat anything. For awhile we just said he was being a finicky toddler. We continued to offer food and snacks while trying to keep him hydrated. He started having tons a diarrhea. We tried the brat diet and everything we could think of to get him eating. It got to a point a few days ago where he was not eating anything. So we switched doctors (his doctor was never available) and we were able to get in the next day. She was concerned that he is not eating and I'm glad she didn't just shrug and say well he is 2. So she ordered labs, CBC, complete metabolic panel, celiac panel, food allergy panel, thyroid functions, and a sed rate. We have an appointment to discuss those results on the 23rd. In the mean time we are not to stress about him eating. We are to just continue to offer, watch for dehydration, and bring him to the hospital if anything significant happens. He has not grown in several months and has not gained weight or he has lost a lot of weight since his last appointment there is no way to be sure. But it's hard to watch him struggle and I'm struggling wanting answers now. If they don't find anything then we are stuck as well, I don't want anything to be wrong with him but at the same time I want to be able to fix it. Sigh this is really difficult.

He has great eye contact that I've noticed with us. I'll pay attention to how he does with other people.

I just told him great job for eating a whole chip this sucks!

Oh no! That has to be very stressful. I hope they can figure out what's going on quickly and have an easy treatment.

I really hope they can figure out what's wrong quickly! I have a friend from high school whose son stopped eating. He was on a feeding tube for months until he just decided to start eating again. She said that he had a traumatic experience and became scared of eating. He's 5. I hope Everett's is an easier fix, and it's not something psychological. Praying for you.

She's been very thorough. If this turns up nothing she is ordering an abdominal u/s and then a GI referral. So hopefully we get some answers.

Steph that terrifies me, I don't think he has had anything traumatic happen that is about food that I know of. We are watching close for dehydration or hypoglycemic events at that point we go to the hospital. He ate 1/2 of a cup of Mac and cheese tonight for dinner, it's the most he has eaten in awhile. We were actually afraid he may throw up. It's really trying, I am sure I am going to break soon.

What about giving him some nutrition shake, like Carnation Instant Breakfast or Ensure - something nutrient dense that he could sip instead of chew? You could add some extra chocolate syrup or a spoonful of icecream from extra calories and flavor, too.

We just actually bought the instant breakfast to try! I'm going to try it tomorrow. I'm really hoping for an answer and not just it being nothing. I mean I don't want anything to be wrong with him but I want it to be something I could fix, ya know?

That's exactly how I feel! It's a strange feeling to say "I hope there is something wrong with my child" but it's true. You want there to be something concrete so you can stop wondering and start fixing.

Another good shake you can make is to put a banana in a blender with some whole milk and a good scoop of peanut butter (assuming no allergies, obviously) and a spoon of Ovaltine powder. Makes a very tasty banana chocolate PB shake that tastes almost like a frappe and has some good nutrients (protein from the PB, potassium from the banana, vitamins from the Ovaltine, calcium from milk, etc).

I've worked with several kids with failure to thrive when I worked in group homes and this was my go-to shake to help them get some extra calories between meals.
