For those that do a mix of BLW and making your own food....do you add anything to the foods to make them less...lumpy? For example, I just mashed a banana with a fork and gave her a few spoons of the mashed banana. It was still kind of thick and lumpy, should I have added breastmilk or something to it? Same with when we feed her carrots later this week... I plan on just steaming them 'til super soft and mashing some and dicing some for her. Should I add BM (which would require me to pump some lol) or something to the mashed portion to make it thinner?

And....I'm guessing the gagging is because she's still just learning how to eat, or is it because the mashed banana was too thick? With each bite she would gag, but still seemed to ingest a few bites. Just curious what others experience with gagging has been?

Everyone does things differently, but what has worked for us in the past is to add breastmilk to make purees thinner *if needed*. If the baby eats lumpy food well, the texture can be a good thing. If baby is gagging no matter what, I say wait a week and try again. None of my kids have ever gagged on food, and I know some say babies do when they are learning to eat, but I really believe that if you wait until the baby is ready in every way, they will eat without gagging on the first go. That said, there's exceptions to most things, so some babies may have OTHER reasons they are gagging that won't go away without extra assistance.

I'm not. I just cut hers really small or if she is having the same veggie I'll cook it a little longer.

I have the baby beaba which steams and blends. For some things like prunes, I add some of the water that collects while steaming with it for blending. For masdhed potatoes, I add a little almond milk (we both eat them so no bm).

I just gave Zack a banana today and I just mashed it up with a fork and didn't add anything to it. I steam the veggies and add some of the water they were steamed in if it needs to be thinner. The only thing I will add the bm to is his cereal when we start it.
