I'm almost in tears again writing this. Two days ago I took a friend to get an ultrasound at a pregnancy center. When the technician learned I'm pregnant she offered to do an ultrasound because one of their new technicians just got done with training and could use the experience. So yesturday, I went to have an ultrasound. I was excited, because I still have a week an a half before my first appt. I explained that I don't know how far along I am. I haven't had a period since having my daughter in March. I told them I thought I should be at least 7 weeks, as I got my BFP 3 weeks ago. Well, after over an hour long ultrasound of the technician learning to work the machine and me having to stop a couple times to go pee, the only thing we seen was a gestational sac. The other technician tried telling me maybe I'm not as far as I thought I was. The machine couln't determine a date based on the size of the gestational sac. I asked how far I'd have to be to get a date on the machine and said I may only be 5 weeks, not 7. I explained there's no way I'm only 5 weeks. That would mean I got a BFP the day we conceived. Not possible. I came home bawling, sobbing, and wrapped myself around my husband. Then, I took a bath and looked up information. From what I've read, it could be a blighted ovum, or the ultrasound was unable to pick up the baby yet. I've never had an ultrasound this early. I'm writing this waiting to get a hold of my Dr.'s office to have them test my HCG levels. I'm devastated but holding hope. It was an awful, horrible experience. Thanks for listening. Hope I can give good news at the end of this!

was it an abdominal u/s? if so, at 7 weeks they might have trouble seeing the baby. i went at 6w5d this pregnancy. the very experienced nurse had trouble seeing anything with the abdominal scan, despite my ridiculously full bladder! they say to drink at least 24 oz of fluid and finish 1 hour before the exam. she then did a transvaginal u/s and saw the baby (just looked like a grain of rice at that point). so all that combined could be why they didn't see anything. i would insist that your doctor's office get you in for a transvaginal u/s right away! hugs!!!

Thanks. I'm waiting for my Dr.'s office to get out of a staff meeting. Grr... I hate patience! She did both types of ultrasound, but she was also having problems finding the uterus during the transvaginal, even though she found it fine during the abdominal. I don't know. Praying it was just a fluke and everything is fine. I haven't had any cramping or spotting, which is good. I just have never been through this before and it's horrible.

I'm so sorry hun! Not knowing is the worst! I had a blighted ovum in August. It's such a strange type of loss to endure. I hope your dr gets back with you quickly and you get answers!! I'll be thinking of you! Please KUP and feel free to message me if you want!

Please oh please don't let this sour you! It sounds like they had no idea what they were even looking at!! How awful a thing to do to a womyn so early in her pregnancy.. Please remain calm!!

Hang in there and know you are supported! A blight ovum is a difficult dx bc of many variables. First, early u/s can only be vaginal. Then, machine must be very powerful to see the tiny bean. Finally, women have variances in their anatomy. All are normal. But if your uterus is tilted backward (for example) it could skew the u/s "view". Since you said she had trouble seeing uterus in vaginal view, I'd bet this is a possibility. Even a skilled experienced OB can't dx blight ovum in one u/s.

Try to be patient. Expect further testing (betas). And another one (or more) u/s.

Keep the faith. Kup.... I'm hopeful...

I am so sorry you had such a bad experience. They should not have done that to do. Over here only the most professional techs do the early scans as early scans are important to the mothers piece of mind and very important on dating etc.

Here they do not do a scan until you are at least 7 weeks unless its ivf or iui. This is due to the many factors which may cause you not to be able to see the baby and cause the mother undue stress. Stress is the worst factor for early miscarriage and its not needed at this stage of pregnancy.

I am hoping you get good info from your doc but if that was here in the UK the people who said they would do the scan would be very very highly and badly penalised for doing something like that.

Hang in there sweetie! I've had plenty of ultrasounds done at learning hospitals and they can be very nerve wrecking! With my two living children a newer tech didn't get to do anything until everything being okay was established. Did thy have someone else more qualified with you? Don't take anything for certain until seeing your doc! I know its stressful, but try to relax and take care of yourself!

I'm sorry It sounds like since it was a new tech with not much experience maybe they just didn't know how to get the best look at the baby like more experienced tech's do.

Hopefully your doctor will get you in soon to ease your mind.

I got into the Dr.'s office after arguing with the nurses for a half an hour. The nurses tried telling me maybe I was only 4-5 weeks. I explained that would mean I got a pos. like the day we conceived. Two, yes two, of them tried telling me that was possible!!! Then, they just wanted to move my appt. on the 17th to the beginning of January! Anyways, I argued long enough that they talked to the PA and she got me in right away. She did an ultrasound and could only see the gestational sac as well. She said it still may be too early to tell. Then she sent me for blood work to check my hcg levels. I'll recheck them on Sat., but won't know anything until Monday. So now it's just a waiting game. She is going to call this afternoon and let me know my levels, which will hopefully help. Thanks for all your support! I did read like someone said, if my uterus is tilted they may not be able to see anything yet. This would make sense, because all of my pregnancies have dated later than I expected at my first ultrasounds, but then measured ahead at my 2nd trimester ultrasounds. So there's still some hope and praying for the best, but also mentally preparing for the worst. Thanks again. I'll keep you all updated.

I've never heard of someone getting a positive THAT early! I hope it's just a tilted uterus..I have heard of people getting faint positives at like 6 dpo but I think thats the earliest i've heard. Maybe you're a late implanter so your dates are a little off? Whatever it is I hope your #'s are great and baby catches up!!

With my current pregnancy, I just felt like I was so I took a test 6 days early and got a BFP.. We were not trying but excited that we were... I am considered high risk because of my blood disorder and I have had 8 M/C (I do have 2 children now) Anyway I have to be seen very early for a u/s and to be put on the correct blood thinners.. I went in they saw nothing on the U/S I should have been 6 week (this is at the high risk specialist clinic with good u/s machines) Anyway I was schedule for the following week and they only found the sac and told me probably not a really pregnancy... because my dates etc dont match up... I went back at was supposed to be 7 week and there it is measuring 7 weeks right on! After going back and forth about my dates... turn out my dates were correct they just couldnt see it! I am hoping it is the same for you! Good luck and keep up posted...

Thanks everyone! You've all filled me with hope! The Dr. just called and said my numbers look good. I think she was surprised. They weren't as high as I thought they should be this far, but still ok. She said they were 4500. Actually, 45something but she acted like she didn't really want to tell me the numbers in the first place, just that they were good. So now I just have to go crazy waiting until monday! She did also say to keep my appt. on the 17th, which she wouldn't even discuss an appt., only miscarriage information when I was in there earlier. So that gives me a little more hope. We'll see. Lots and lots of prayers this weekend!
