Anyone flying over the holidays? I forgot to talk to my doctor about it during my first appointment, but I am nervous to fly. I guess I Just don't know if the full body scanners cause any harm. I read online that they do have a little bit of x-ray in them???? I'm probably going to ask for the pat down, if the lines aren't too bad. As anyone else flown before during pregnancy and have you heard anything about the body scanners? When I leave I will be 10weeks and 2 days.

I went through them when I was first pregnant. There was a video playing at the same time and it said it was safe for pregnant ladies. I debated asking for a pat-down but the lines were horrendous and I figured they'd probably pull me aside for questioning (I was also traveling with syringes and liquid progesterone) so I figured I wouldn't draw anymore attention to myself.

I'm leaving for Chicago on Thursday. I didn't even think about the scanners.

I didn't see this thread, so I just posted this in the other travel thread, but I'll repost here

You have the right to refuse it! Just get a note from your Dr. My sister did not feel comfortable with it (it's not proven safe during pregnancy. It's an x-ray! The dentist wont even do those if you're pregnant because of the potential risk!) So she talked with her midwife and got a note stating she was pregnant and it was unsafe for baby. They have to do a pat-down, but my sister didn't mind. It was worth it to her to be safe. Oh and security did not appreciate the "inconvenience" she was causing and tried persuading her to just go through the scanner, but she put her foot down and demanded they pat her down instead (which is supposed to be an option to anyone flying, btw...).

I have been through the scanners before while pregnant. I didnt know that you had the option of opting out....thats fair!! I do understand though the trouble and time it can cause for some people or even the delay espically if your running close to boarding time and other little ones with you ...but thats really nice to know that we do have the option either way....thnx for shring

I don't know the risk but since it's the 1st trimester I would opt out of it & ask for the pat down instead..better to be safe & less worry!

I've flown a bazillion times in the last few years, but they've always put me through to the pat-down line automatically... maybe because I've either been obviously pregnant, or maybe because I have small kids? But I've never had the option of doing the scanner line? Maybe you'll luck out!!

I always opt out & get a pat down. I travel often & I wouldn't want to be exposed to that much radiation. It's certainly not pregnancy friendly.

I am not flying for the holidays - but I will be in February and I am planning to get to the airport early and opt for the pat down. I figure better safe than sorry I know they say it is fine for pregnant women but in the research i was doing I found no studies on it really. . .

the amount of radiation is so tiny that i, personally, wouldn't have a problem going through there. but you can always opt for the pat down.

Thanks for all the feedback! I think I will see how long the lines are and decide then.
