Neither one rents out breast pumps! My SIL is going to deliver soon and is nervous about BFing since she failed twice before... But it kinda seems like she is setting herself up for failure again... For all the bottle stuff and formula and no breast pump! I told her she could ren one from our local hospital.. NO no he CAN'T! Neither one rents them out!!! I really thought it was more common??? Who here knows if their hospital does or doesn't? Does anyone know anything about where she could rent one? Or Medicaid help?

Here you can get one from WIC for $20 and you will get that $20 back when you return the pump.

I'm not sure about our hospital..I'm going to ask though. I know WIC does so that's worth looking into too.

If she has any kind of insurance, she should ask them about it. As of January first, insurance is supposed to cover a pump.

Ditto what Sugaree said: check with your insurance. Mine had a special prenatal program, which covers the cost of a pump, classes, and a variety of other things.

The lactation consultant taught me to pump by hand. I rented one of those fancy high-grade pumps from the hospital and could barely get half an ounce. Doing it by hand I could get 3ounces. The woman who ran out birth classes said the same thing that woman can often get more just by pumping by hand...so tell her to experiment a bit I hated the pump!

Around here medical places rent them (ones that rent and sell medical equipment) and insurances pay, usually, including medicaid.

I hope she finds one and at least gives it a try. That being said I was not able to exclusively breastfeed DS1. My doctor and midwife and I tried absolutely everything and my body just wouldn't produce enough and he kept losing weight (and my breasts actually barely changed in size during pregnancy and after birth so I was told I'd probably have to supplement any baby I had). I eventually had to start supplementing. It is very hard to deal with when you fully expected to be able to EBF and find out you aren't able to. When I was pregnant with DS2 I was struggling with the thought of not being able to EBF him but thankfully my body decided to produce way more than I ever did with DS1 and I was able to. So I hope she at least tries but if she isn't able to because of her body I hope she isn't to hard on herself because it does and can happen despite everyone's efforts to produce enough.

I was frustrated that when I tried calling my insurance and they told me they don't cover them but I could rent one from wic. I hope she gets some help with that soon!
