I went to a portrait class with MIL on Thursday. I've gone to a couple of art classes with her, as she is the administrator to the local art club and often needs help setting up for the workshops etc. A lady I had seen at another event asked me if I am an artist. I said "OOOOh, NOOooo!" Although I really enjoy art theory and the history of art, learning about artists and their works etc, I was never very good at producing it. Then MIL piped in and said "She is in her own way... you should see the lovely picture albums she lays out, and the cards she makes. She has such an eye for visuals like that!" It kind of embarrassed me LOL And I said "Well, I guess I'm more 'craftsy'" and the other lady (who is a high school art teacher) said "Oh no, that's an art! It sure is! It takes just as much skill and appeal to the aesthetic as anything I do on my canvas!"

So it got me wondering if you ladies consider it an art? I've always thought of it as a hobby, but I guess any artist could say that about their work!

For myself I don't see it as an art. But some of these other ladies on her I think it is an art. Their work far outshines my own.

I've always thought that the interpretation of art is a personal thing. For me, I do think it is an artform. I'm by no means artistic but I'm happy to say that scrapbooking satisfies the inner Picasso in me. LOL.

It definitely is. That is why I am interested in how others feel about it.

LOL about the Picasso thing, because I too have never considered it an art, but I tell people "paper is my medium" I guess I don't consider it an art because there really is nothing that my pages are "saying" other than "this is a great memory" And really it is beautiful only to those who know me, and might be interesting to those who also scrapbook just for technique purposes. It doesn't have a philosophical subject, I guess is the reason. I suppose one *could* make art from it, but I have yet to see it, and I don't plan on being the one to do it!

I consider it art because alot of thought goes into each page I do. It's not as simple as sticking a photo on a page and slapping a title on. I think for each one of us, choosing the colours, the placement, the embellishments, the way you want to convey the page and how you want others to interpret it - that is what makes it art for me.
