Following our discussions yesterday, here's an article that was written by a family friend about having a baby with Down Syndrome. I love this because it doeesn't talk about religion or destiny or anything else that could be 'consolation' for having a child with DS; it just truly looks at what it's like to celebrate difference.
I love that article It's a lot like what we went through with my boys Autism. I have heard that people with Down Syndrome are some of the sweetest kids ever. They might learn slower, but they aren't "difficult" kids. When we heard this baby might have down syndrome, my husband was worried it would be like "autism but worse" and he can't cope with the behavioral issues of autism very well (it's hard on our family) but we read and learned more and it seems that some developmental things are harder but they aren't "hard kids" so that helped us feel more at ease. We don't have to "worry" about it anymore, but learning more about it I think makes it less scary to those who don't understand it.

Thanks for sharing that wonderful article. I had my hair done a couple of days ago by a young woman who has an older brother with ds. She said that "I wouldn't be the person I am today without him". When she spoke of him, she spoke with such pride of his little accomplishments..
