so a little over a week ago my son had an ear infection once again! i brought him in to the doctors, the dr. forgot we were in the room and we are waiting there for an hour and half with a screaming baby, i tell her this is his third ear infection since december and i would like to get him checked out by an ENT because i have a long history or ear problems, of course i have to wait for three more infections, then i tell her one antibiotic does not work for him and another does and she decides to put him on something else that causes diarrhea and i explain to her that my son already has an upset tummy and diarrhea and pretty much oh well hes getting that one antibiotic. i was a little peeved but this lady wasnt my regular pediatrician she just worked in the same office.
aside from that... i bring my son back in today to his regular pediatrician to make sure the infection was gone and ask about his one year shots. The doctor tells me its the one for chicken pox and the mmr, i told him i wanted to hold off on those for awhile, and he questions me, i tell him that i didnt really see the necessity in the chicken pox shot and the mmr is very controversial and maybe before school ill have him get it just not at this age. he proceeds to tell me how the study that was done was false and the man is in prison in england.... and then he tells me... "it is your responsibility as a parent to immunize your child and to protect other citizens" ***?!?!?!?!?! then says if my son gets chicken pox and some kid in his class is going through chemo it could kill them, for one who is going to send there child to school with a bunch of snot nose kids when there child has a compromised immune system, for two why the hell would i send my son to school if he has the chicken pox?? then he tells me chicken pox is deadly two of his patients died but the patients had lymphoma and hodkins disease. im just furious thinking how someone can say i am an irresponsible parent because i choose to hold off on an immunization. who the **** are you telling me what is right and what is wrong with what i choose for MY child.
I hear you, especially on the ear infection thing. My son has chronic ear infections and it took messing around with several antibiotics over 3-4 months for us to finally figure out what works for him. The wait in the room just totally, totally sucks. There are few things more frustrating than being stuck in an unfamiliar environment with your little one.
I find it interesting that your dr started chastising you when you made it perfectly clear you do intend to immunize before school. And I second you on the "why would a parent send their child to school going through chemo?" I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen. Lol.
Sorry it has been a rough week with your pediatrician.
yea i just really worry about my son with the ear infections because it took my parents 11 years worth of ear infections at least 6 a year at the minimum to get me into an ENT and it turned out my eustation tube was not functioning i had no middle ear space and over nine cholesteatoma's in there. ive gone through six surgeries and i just feel he should be seen by an ENT to monitor him just in case there is a more serious problem going on.
and with the dr. i really felt as if he was bullying me into doing what he felt was best. i get you need to state medical fact and thats fine im okay with that but pulling out my "duties" as a parent was out of line in a situation like this.
Sounds to me like its time for a new pediatrician. Do you need a referral for a specialist with your insurance? With my insurance I can go wherever I want (LOVE my insurance!!)
He was out of line, and delaying, or even refusing vaccines, does not make you an irresponsible parent. You are absolutely right about wanting your son to see an ear doc.
I agree with Jenifer and think you should switch pedi's right away. No doctor has a right to bully you in such a way. You are right to want to have him seen by an ENT and he's a jerk for treating you the way he did. I switched pedi's when my youngest son was 9 months old because of a different, but still somewhat similar situation and it was the best decision I ever made. Having the right pedi in your corner can make a WORLD of difference. Sending you HUGS!
Third- some vaccines shed, so him getting vaccinated would put that same child at risk! Its your responsibility to keep your child safe, the rest of the citizens aren't your concern. He wants you to risk your child to "protect" another? I'd be finding a new pedi.
Your doctor has wrong facts. The guy that did the MMR study is not in jail. He's doing research right now, not that anyone will ever believe him again in the medical community, but he's trying to clear his name because he believes in the cause. Also, it is your right to hold off or refuse. It is wrong and devicive of a doctor to throw scare tactics at you. Do not let them away your decision. Sorry you went through that. I've dealt with a lot of that myself, and I have no respect for a doctor that uses scare tactics. Give me facts and let me weigh the options, but do not scare or guilt me.
