Study: Parents who ‘clean’ pacifiers with their mouths prevent kids’ allergies

Excerpt:

Quote:
The study was conducted by researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy of Göteborg University in Sweden and found that babies exposed to their parents’ saliva stimulated their babies’ immune systems, ABC News reported.

These results were found after the University followed 184 babies and their parents and tested them. Their studies show that babies who are given their pacifiers after they have been in the parents’ mouths were 63% less likely to get eczema, and 88% less likely to develop asthma later in life.

Researchers attribute the decreased risk of developing allergies, eczema, and asthma to the early introduction of microbes from parents’ mouths. US News Health Day reported that the transfer of oral bacteria trains a baby’s immune systems to ignore germs that are not harmful.

Dr. Ron Ferdman, a pediatric allergist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, told US News, “The immune system’s purpose is to differentiate between harmless and harmful. If your immune system is not presented with enough microbes, it just defaults to doing harmful attacks against things that are not harmful, like food, cat dander, or dust mites.”

Interesting! I want to see a study done on pacies that have been dropped on the floor. Then I can tell my mom to chill a little.

Interesting. I popped Haeden's in my mouth before when I didn't think it was clean enough for his and couldn't get to a sink. I'm not really freaked about germs much.
