I'm looking into getting Nate a new car seat. He's still in a convertible car seat but I'm seeing it's getting a little small for him. He's tall - 39.5" and weighs between 32-34lbs. What would you suggest that wouldn't break my wallet?

Nautilus or frontier

Nautilus harnesses to 65lbs and then boosters

Frontier harnesses to 85-90 depending on model, then boosters.

Absolutely he needs to still be harnessed. At his age I would definitely suggest something that will convert to a belt positioning booster when he's ready. The Nautilus is a great option that's relatively low cost. Just by way of warning, I would avoid the alpha omega seat you will probably see. It's cheaper, but makes a REALLY bad booster (rarely fits kids well with the seatbelt).

Some things to look for as far as when he's ready for a booster:

Needs to be able to sit still and not lean over to pick up toys
Mature enough not to move the shoulder strap out of the way
belt needs to sit low on his hips (across the upper thighs) and securely across his shoulder and chest (not cut into his neck or fall off the shoulder)
Be at LEAST 40lbs

The longer you can keep him harnessed, the safer he'll be

That's where I've been leaning towards, the harness seat. I've been looking at the Graco Nautilus for a while now.

I have heard decent things about the maestro, but not much specifically with respect to how it fits as a booster. If you can, have him sit in it and see if you can figure out where the belt would hit in booster mode. If it's pretty low on his hips and not too wide at the should it should be okay

I *always* test them out before I buy them.

I have our boys (4 and 3) in Radians which have five point harnesses. Ours are from when they were made under the Sunshine Kids brand, though I think they are now under the Diono brand. I believe the newer versions have the ability to convert to a booster with the shoulder belt, but ours don't so I can't say how well that feature works. It's not a cheap seat and I think they've gotten more expensive since we got ours, but we've had them in them since they outgrew an infant seat, so they'll each get 4-5 years in them. Since they go up to 80 pounds, I imagine we might stop using them before they outgrown them (or grow too tall).

we have the older style Radians as well. My oldest outgrew hers by height at about 5.5 (like 42lbs, tall child!!!). I was sad. I've heard the new ones make good boosters. We *might* buy one when we need a new seat, which I expect we will in a few more years as all of ours will be nearing expiration
