WASHINGTON OUTBREAK
CDC says during recent whooping cough epidemic, most cases were in vaccinated children.
75.8% of children aged 3months to 10years who caught whooping cough were up to date on DtaP.
43.1% for children aged 11-12years, and 77.2% for children aged 13-19, and 93.2% for children aged 19months to 35months (3 or more doses) and 81.9% (4 or more doses) and 70.6% for 13-17 years.

VERMONT OUTBREAK
"Vaccinated kids account for 90 percent of child whooping cough cases in Vermont.

As of Aug. 10, there were 178 confirmed cases of pertussis in Vermont children between the ages of six months and 18 years. Of that number, 90 percent — or 160 kids — had received at least one dose of the child vaccination, while the majority had received five or six doses. According to the DOH, one child had received one or two doses, eight had received three doses, nine had received four doses, 74 had received five doses and 68 had received six doses.

And it’s not just Vermont; every state but Michigan and California have experienced outbreak levels at least twice as high as those recorded by the CDC at this time in 2011. As of the 39th week of 2011, the CDC had recorded 11,969 pertussis cases. That number has nearly tripled this year, as officials have documented 30,908 cases."

The chart at the bottom of the article is very interesting as well. I'd be curious how the jump in whooping cough numbers correlates (if at all) with the increase in vaccines.

SAN DIEGO OUTBREAK

"California is in the midst of the worst whooping cough epidemic in 50 years. The numbers raise questions about how well the vaccine works."

"We found that of 332 confirmed cases of whooping cough, 197 of the people who got sick were up to date with their immunizations." (more than half!)

NEW YORK OUTBREAK
100% of whooping cough victims were vaccinated:

"Most recently, an outbreak of whooping cough hit Smithtown, New York. Thirteen students, all of whom were vaccinated, were affected. Last year, California reported 9,477 cases of whooping cough, with 10 deaths. The numbers were unrelated to vaccination rates. So far this year, there have been over a thousand cases in California."

Read this article to learn more. The whooping cough vaccine only protects against an older strain of whooping cough and only against whooping cough caused by B. Pertussis but not B. parapertussis.

Moral: Vaccinated or not parents need to be educated on how to treat pertussis and not assume their child is protected by the vaccine, ESPECIALLY since the vaccine is only intended to protect against one kind of pertussis and not both kinds, which means that EVEN IN THEORY the vaccine will not protect you against pertussis.

Whooping Cough Outbreaks in Vaxed Children More and More Frequent

"New research reported by Reuters reveals that whooping cough outbreaks are HIGHER among vaccinated children compared with unvaccinated children. This is based on a study led by Dr. David Witt, an infectious disease specialist at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael, California."
