These are another staple in my Christmas cookie baking, and DH's favorite. Nom nom! I usually double or triple the batch, but only make one batch at a time or it gets hard to mix everything together.

Thanks! I was googling this earlier and found this. I was wondering, do you ever use butter instead of shortening, or do half butter, half shortening? Do you just use Crisco plain shortening?

I meant to reply to this earlier but got distracted...sorry!

I use shortening (Crisco). My mom uses butter. The butter makes the cookies most crisp and flatter-still delicious (with more of a buttery flavor), don't get me wrong, but I like how the shortening makes the cookies "puffier." I've never tried half butter and half shortening-but I'm sure they'd taste wonderful! Hmmmm, might have to try that on one of the batches.

Yeah, last time I used butter and the cookies flattened. I definitely want the puffy look. I may try half butter, half Crisco or get butter flavored shortening, if they still make it. So excited!

I just made them tonight. I used all shortening, bc I hadn't put out the butter yet to soften. They puffed up really well with the shortening, but I do feel they were missing that butter flavor. My son helped me roll the balls and coat them in sugar!
