Hi Everybody. I was diagnosed last week, and today is day 3 with my meter...etc.
My name is Linda and I'm due January 24th with my 3rd.

I seems like my numbers are out of whack all the time! Yesterday and the day before, I only had 1 or 2 good numbers out of 7.
I almost think my meter is screwed, but it probably isn't. It was so high after a couple of meals that I took 3 different readings, and they were wildly different from eachother..is that normal??

I SO want to be able to avoid insulin, and I know I'm new, but I'm so frustrated every time I do my test and it's over. I just feel like a failure 7 times a day!!!

Help! I really need to know what exactly to eat.

Linda

Did they send you to an education class and go over a meal plan? I was very frustrated at first because I would eat the correct amount of carbs and still be high even after starting meds(glyburide). But we finally found a good dose and now I pretty much eat the same things and I generally eat at least one carb serving less than what they said I could. I had to experiment and try different foods to see what worked for me. Always eat a protein with a carb, it will help. I read lables all the time.

My fasting numbers are always the hardest for me to control. I always make sure to have a protein packed snack before bed, it's supposed to help. As for meals during my last pregnancy I was given the guidelines of 30 carbs for breakfast, 45 for lunch, and 60 for dinner and then 30 for snacks. But based on my own body I learned that I couldn't go anywhere near that 30 carbs in the morning without my sugar spiking. It's really just a period of trial and error in the beginning. Lots of label reading. A great resource to invest in is a book called Calorie King. It lists every product imaginable and quite a few restaurant menus.

Tammy, yes, I had the education appointment on Tuesday, the same day they gave me the meter.

She gave me a guideline of 45 breakfast, 60 lunch and 60 dinner.
NOT A CHANCE!!

I'm afraid that I'm going to run out of tweaking time before I get it figured out!
They gave me two weeks.

Megg...my faster numbers are high too. I tried peanut butter toast (only 1 slice) and a glass of milk before bed, didn't work. I also tried 20 almonds, didn't work either.

My dinner number last night was a good one. I had 5 oz chicken breast, 3.5 oz sweet potato, and 5.25 oz broccoli. That, plus 12 minutes on the treadmill, gave me a reading of 6.4, which is equal to 115.2, my limit is 7.2, or 129.6 for after meals.

They gave me 45 for breakfast, 45 for lunch and 60 for supper. 15 for mid morning and mid afternoon snacks and 30 for bedtime snack. I can't follow those or my numbers would be high. My doc in Ms had me on a stricter diet of 30 for all 3 meals maybe 45 for supper but I think it was 30 and 15 for all snacks. I usually have around 30 for breakfast and lunch and supper probably 30-45 at supper, depending on what we are having and how hungry I am.
