So here's little Jett's story. I'm going to start from before birth -- Everything was going well and she was measuring great up until her 31 week appointment. At that time she was in the 20th percentile. I was told that we would just keep an eye on it, but that we don't even worry about it until she is under the 10th percentile. At her next appointment - 35 weeks, my belly still hadn't grown at all. I was put on bed rest to see if we could get more life going to the cord/placenta and told to come back in a week. I didn't quite make it the week. On Tuesday night (12/11) I got really sick - throwing up and in the bathroom all night. I couldn't keep anything down so I called the doctor the next morning and went in to get some IV fluids. It was the day before my original appointment so he just did another check then - still no belly growth, so he did another u/s and now she had dropped into the 3rd percentile. NST was great, but he scheduled a cord study for Fri (12/14) and an appointment with a specialist on Tuesday (12/18). Cord study on Fri happened and I was told that the cord wasn't looking good and that she was officially diagnosed with IUGR, so come in for a NST on Monday and prepare for a induction on Fri (12/21 - also 37 weeks). NST on Monday was fine, but doctor wanted to move up the induction to Wed (12/19). Appointment with specialist on Tuesday morning showed more of what we knew - talked to doctor after that and he wanted me admitted that evening to start the induction process.

After the specialist appointment on 12/17 I went home and started getting ready to go in that evening. I was really excited when I lost the rest of my mucus plug during the day and I checked my cervix in the shower and I had started to open up! Yay! At this point I was hoping that I wouldn't need a full induction, but maybe just some gel or something to get the ball rolling at this point. I still wanted a natural, un-medicated birth and was very against having an epidural.
DH and I went to the hospital at 5:00, got checking in and hooked up to some monitors and saw that I was having mild but regular contractions. They checked my cervix and confirmed that it was starting to open, but only .5cm. They couldn't do the cytotec because of the contractions so they monitored me a while to see what would happen and then were able to put in the cervadil at 8 pm. Overnight the contractions were getting stronger and very regular. By the shift change in the morning I was having contractions every 1-2min, but I had only progressed to 1 cm. Doctor said it was time to start pitocin at 8am. Still no change by 10am, so he ruptured my membranes and turned up the pitocin. Having regular and painful contractions so I walked the halls, rocked in the chair and that helped some. I really wanted to lean forward and have DH massage my hips, but every time I leaned, baby's heart rate would drop. Contractions kept getting stronger and way more painful to the point I wanted to take a shower around 3:00, and then get in the tub. By 4:00 I was still in the tub but the contractions were unbearable. I hadn't had anything for pain yet and so I told the nurse that I needed something. She knew that I wanted to go as natural as possible so she suggested checking my cervix. Nothing. No change at all. Still 1cm. No one could believe it. Doctor came in and checked. At this point because of baby's heart rate they said the most likely way to still deliver vaginally was to try an epidural because that might relax my cervix. I said fine and the anesthesiologist came in and gave me an epidural. It was great. They turned up the pitocin to as high as baby would allow. The contractions were extremely strong - I could feel my whole body tense up, but there wasn't pain. Well, for the first 10 min. Then the epidural started to fail on my left side. Within 20 min it was completely gone on the left, but completely numb on the right. I couldn't do anything for pain relief, not even move on the bed. It was really awful. We gave it a full hour and the doctor did another cervical check. Still nothing. He asked if I had some kind of scar tissue issue that I hadn't mentioned. He was completely baffled. 3 doctors and 5 nurses were on standby for my normal delivery, but as they had tried all they could with no change, my doctor came back in and said, it was time for a c-section. Baby's heart rate had continued to dip way down every time I had a contraction and I hadn't changed at all. So sad. I said I knew thats what we had to do and said fine - it was go time after that. They had to bump another case so that we could use the OR and in 15 min I was being wheeled into surgery. I cried a little and then felt sad that DH was going to be alone afterwards so I told him to call his parents to come and be with him. They called in additional help so I had 3 doctors, 1 pediatrician (also a doctor I guess), 2 assistants, 5 nurses and 2 anesthesiologists - oh and a scared husband - all in the operating room. Jett was born at 6:29pm. I felt tugging and then heard squawking and I knew that I had a baby. It was really hard because the operating room is so cold and my arms were strapped down and I couldn't see anything and I told my husband to be with her so I just laid there and let the tears flow. It was beautiful to hear her cry, but I don't think I've ever felt more lonely. I was being very good and calm so when they finally brought her by my head I asked if they could unstrap one of my hands so I could touch her while DH held her. They let me do that for about 30 seconds, then took her away and strapped me back down. Most the people left the room with DH and Jett so I just laid there waiting to be sewed up. I got a nice row of staples across my belly. I was taken to recovery and was in there for about 30 min before I asked if I could see Jett yet. The people in recovery said that she was still getting cleaned up, weighed, etc and that I would see her once I was out of recovery, but fortunately one of my nurses (who was AMAZING) said that no new mom cares if their newborn is cleaned up and she went and got Jett and brought her to me right away. I got to hold Jett and put her against my chest and she started to nurse right away. We stayed like that and as they took me to my room and Jett just slept on my chest almost all night. There have been other big ups and downs, but we are just so grateful for our little girly that we are happy to take the good with the bad.

I am so glad you were able to have a nurse advocate for that special time with your baby. I'm sorry it ended with a c-section, but it sounds like the right choice was made. I hope you are feeling better soon .

Wow that is quite the story! Labor obviously didn't go how you expected, but what is important is that you and the baby are healthy! That's so great that they got you bonding with her right after and she even nursed! I am really hoping for that as well.

Glad to hear that she is here and healthy albeit early

Wow...every story is so different! I hate you had to go through all of that but so glad baby's here and all is well!

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb...I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made...My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together...Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Wow, amazing story! You describe the emotions so well. I'm sorry you had to go through painful labor, and still wind up with a c-section... But it sounds like it was all worth it in the end. Thanks for sharing your story.

It's hard when things don't go as hoped for. So glad you had one of those nurses who is worth her weight in gold, though! "Cleaned up" or not, babies need their mamas and mamas need their babies!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful story.

I full-on cried when I got to the part with you all alone in the OR without your baby. I know that feeling. I also cried because I love that nurse who decided that you and your baby "needed" each other. GOOD FOR HER! I hope that I have someone as understanding. What you went through was so rough that I know that it was nice to have someone be that sweet at that point.

I'm glad that she's here and safe, and you can both rest a little more easily. I hope that you're recovering well, too!
