Is any one suffering from this? If so can you describe your symptoms? I'm having major hand problems, and hoping it's only this but when I google my symptoms they point more towards arthritis. I have interstital cystitis (chronic inflamation of the bladder) and a lot of people who have that also have rheumatoid arthritis, and I'm freaking out that I might too. I was just going to wait out the pregnancy and see if it went away- especialyl because I don't know if any of the testing or treatment would be safe for baby, but my right hand is practically unusable, typing this right now is killing me.

Basically, my symptoms are worse at night. At night and early in the AM I wake up with my hands basically like claws all of my joints hurt and are very stiff. But, the worst of the pain is at the base of my thumbs, and that lasts all through out the day, they lock into place sometimes and click and pop a lot and I find it difficult to do things like type, open bottles or jars, wring out my hair in the shower, etc. Could it be carpal tunnel? I hope it's just that.... I've emailed my pcp about it, and my next ob appointment is next Wednesday. Not sure if I should bring it up there or not?

ETA: cold causes the joints to hurt worse- I've tried icing and I get an extremely deep painful ache in my joints. Which unfortunately also makes me think arthritis.

I'm pretty sure I am. When I wake up in the mornings, my hands are numb and tingly, and one of them I have difficulty closing/using fully for an hour or so after getting up (today was the worst it's been - I can make a fist now but it's still not totally normal and I just tried to write something with a pen and failed). Sleeping seems to be the only thing that irritates my symptoms - I'm not bothered by typing or anything like that. I tried cold water for the first time this morning and found that it helped speed up the process of turning my claw back into a normal hand. The numbness and tingling goes away if I shake my hands out a few times and roll my wrists for a little while.

I would definitely mention it at your appointment. I don't know enough about carpal tunnel or arthritis to be able to give an opinion on what you're experiencing. There are some things that you said that are similar to what I'm dealing with, but some things that are different. Keep in mind, though, that I've not been formally diagnosed with pregnancy carpal tunnel, either, and I'm just going off of what I've read online. I'll probably mention it at my next appointment too, but that isn't until early August.

Thanks Kayla! Yeah, numbness and tingling seem to be two big symptoms of carpal tunnel that I am not experiencing. Sigh. I'll definitely bring it up at my OB appointment and am currently waiting back to hear what my PCP thinks I should do. I really didn't want o have to go see a specialist about this before the baby came (trying to conserve my paid time off) but it's gotten really bad and I don't want to end up out of work completely because I can't type! Plus obviously I don't want to do any permanent damage.

I'll keep you guys posted! Fingers crossed that I'm wrong and it's only carpal tunnel. Not that carpal tunnel doesn't suck, but at least it should go away after baby comes.

I hope it's something that's easily fixed too!

I've had carpal tunnel since I was 18 due to banging on my piano.

Do you feel pain on your ring finger and pinky finger? Or is it just the first 3 fingers on your hand? If its just those three, its a good indication that its carpal tunnel and not something else.

When i wake up in the middle of the night/early morning with had stiffness and pain it's the entire hand. Through out the day the only pain I really feel is at the wrist/base of thumb. The rest basicaly happens only at night/early am.

I have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel due to using the mouse (well its my job!!) It was at its worst abt 5 yrs back and since then I have done a lot of ergonomic changes to make sure it doesn't flare up and its been ok so far. My symptoms were the opposite of Bri's though, it was the ring finger and pinky that had the numbness and tingling and I'd get the 'funny-bone' feeling run all the way up to my elbow sometimes, plus pain on my neck and shoulder area on the back, but I could tell they were connected. When it flared up it got worse in the mornings as well, and the Doctor told me I was likely putting pressure on my wrist while sleeping some how.

The pain was definitely not joint related and I would never describe it as stiffness.

Now last time during pregnancy towards the very end, my ankles and toes were swollen and my fingers started to swell a bit too and I did start to experience stiffness and joint pain in the fingers and toes. Therefore even though your's does not sound like carpal tunnel, it could very well be pregnancy induced joint issues?? Just my thoughts though...

Hopefully your doctor will be able to shed more light.

I haven't had any problems with this pregnancy but had horrible carpal tunnel with my first son (I never even realized it was a pregnancy symptom until then). It was only in my right hand and up into my right arm/elbow. It was much worse at night, but did hurt all day too. I had numbness and tingling but the worst part was the area at the base of my thumb. I would wake up and that area would be swollen and even looked bruised. It hurt for a few weeks even after delivery but eventually went away.

Thanks for sharing everyone! My primary care physician responded once with how far along I am in the pregnancy and said she agrees it sounds like arthritis but it could be carpal tunnel (lol helpful, yes?), I wrote back with my due date and asked her how I should procede, and no response. Hoping she gets back to me, but she has the tendancy to drop the ball. Probably won't get any answers til my OB appointment next week, if they even have any answers for me. Oh well. I might just buy wrist braces to try, if it's carpal tunnel, they will help and if they don't help then its probably arthritis...
