Is anyone doing this? Has anyone done this in previous pregnancies? What are your thoughts on it?

We looked into doing it because it was something I really wanted to do but it is SO expensive!! Just for the first year and all of the initial fees, it was close to $2,000....maybe $3,000 (can't remember). And that's not something we can do right now. That was through Cord Blood Registry (CBR). If anyone knows of a place that may be cheaper, please let me know!

I would love to, but sadly there's no way we could afford it.

Talk to your doctor about donating cord blood if you cannot afford to bank it. I think they, at least in some regions, bank donated cord blood which is used for eligible recipients who need it. If not, cancer researchers use the cord to create artificial blood vessels to test new cancer drugs-they very well may even be able to do both of these things.

We will not be doing it. It's expensive and, in addition, there's a lot of controversy over whether or not you would actually get any value out of it.

For example, *if* your child was diagnosed with something like leukemia down the road, most doctors would actually NOT use that same child's cord blood/stem cells for treatment because those cells will have the same propensity to be "sick" too. I suppose you *could* use cord blood/stem cells in the event that a sibling was the one who was sick, but that's another big "if" and they would still need to have compatible blood types. There's also a lot of uncertainty regarding whether the amount of cells that could be collected could be used effectively.

We're also planning to practice delayed cord clamping when the baby is born, which isn't really conducive to banking cord blood.

I think the whole cord blood/stem cell thing is interesting and could hold a lot of potential with more time and research, but for our family it doesn't really offer enough definitive benefit for the cost as it is right now.

^^ditto this - except we plan to donate our cord blood They simply come by and collect it when you deliver and there is no cost to you. You can't use it for your own family, but at least it will have some kind of benefit hopefully.

We donated it.....

if g-d forbid you needed it in the future and it hadn't already matched someone else, you could use it.

Our cord blood goes into our baby. We don't clamp or cut the cord until it stops pulsing

Like others have said, if banking isn't an option due to cost, look into donating.

I agree with what Keakie said. I talked this over with my OBGYN friend and she specified those reasons exactly. She definitely said to donate if you can though so that will be something we'll be looking into.

Yeah after reading more on the internet about it and asking some other people, we decided not to do it. I wish they had a public bank here to donate, but they don't. So we won't be doing it. Hubby was also concerned with stats saying that the blood might not last as long as you are paying for storage. Thanks everyone for the input.

I am with the rest.. we couldn't afford to bank it. And I have been thinking about the delayed clamping.

I will talk to DH about donating it if we can.
