It's pneumonia and possibly whooping cough. Ah but here's the kicker, they don't test for whooping cough at our doctors office. So he says it sounds like it, but can't tell us for sure. So she is on antibiotics for whooping cough just in case and if she keeps a fever for 4 days, or it leaves and comes back within the 4 days we have to go back for chest x-rays.

My grandma asked if she needed to stay home from school and he said that 'technically' she can go back after 24 hours on the antibiotics, but if she's still coughing she will just be spreading germs.

I went down and talked to our school nurse and she said she would put money on it being whooping cough. The schools policy says 5 days on antibiotics before they can return with whooping cough but parents aren't doing it because the doctors here don't test for it. She said if it was her kid she would keep them out until Monday and said if I decided to she would tell the office it was an excused absence for medical purposes. So Dd is home until Monday.

wow, that is crazy that they don't test for it. Tristen had it when he was a baby, well he was about a year old. they did test us for it here. He had the vaccination for it too. I guess I was naive back then thinking that a vaccine would actually prevent it, lol.
I hope she is feeling better soon. Are you going to keep her out till Monday?

Thanks ladies! I went and talked to the doctors office and they said the reason they didn't test for whooping cough is because she does have pneumonia, and the medicine they give for pneumonia is the same as what they give for whooping cough. The whooping cough test takes two weeks to get back and since they are already treating it (because they are treating the pneumonia) there is no reason to test her. That is also the same reason why they are not doing the xray. If she still has symptoms after 4 days we have to go back for the xray and possibly more aggressive medicine.

I told them what the school nurse said and they did give me a doctors note from today until next Monday though, so that's taken care of.

Poor baby! I hope she feels better soon.

Jamie, I had the MMR 5+ times in my life, and I still caught the mumps and never became immune to rubella! My brother had it and still caught the measles. lol Not always guaranteed. I thought they'd be better now than 30 years ago, though.

Poor girl. I hope she feels better soon. I know the vaccines sometimes make the illness not as bad, but they aren't 100%. Here in VT we have had big whooping cough outbreaks, and it can be scary.

Yea she's had her DtAP and the booster but the doctor said it's going around like crazy. Hopefully since she has had it it won't be that bad...

My sister had it twice in 4 years, (she was immunised,) & it blitzed through town back when my youngest was a baby. I pumped everyone full of vitamin C & our household was left relatively unscathed. SIL's kids though copped it hard

Everyone was vaccinated, & caught it from people that were also vaccinated.

to you and her. I hope she feels better soon. It's amazing how parents don't follow instructions from doctors or ask around so they make sure their child doesn't spread germs to other children, especially with something like whooping cough, in school.

Thanks ladies. The antibiotics are doing there job it seems, the child goes nuts (hyper) as soon as I give them to her. She's still coughing a lot but it's to be expected.
