So awhile back I posted about my plans to make a big brother kit for my 3 year old son and was wondering if anyone had some ideas. I have seen where some parents made a bag filled with snacks, toys, etc for older siblings and I know he would like that. I want to make mine different though. I want my son to feel like his role as a big brother is important, he is very into helping out right now. I am thinking of getting a smaller baby bag and putting some diapers, pacifiers, baby books, burp cloths, etc in there so that he can help get things for baby and feel included.

A friends mom also told me that when her second baby was born, she had her kids "exchange gifts". The older one picked out a gift for the baby, and mom bought the older sibling a gift "from the baby" so they felt an immediate connection. This makes sense to me and I think it would make my son feel super special if he thought his little brother got him a gift! Does anyone else have other plans for helping an older sibling adjust to a new baby? I would love to hear your ideas!

I will be working on the big brother kit soon and will post some pics when I am done!

When I had #3 I took my older two to build a bear and they made one to take to the hospital to give the baby.

I usually buy, wrap, and bring gifts for the kids to open at the hospital when they're hanging out. It's usually stuff to do or play with.

Your baby bag is a sweet idea

Those sound like great ideas to make him feel included! Giving him the title of "Big helper" might help too. I hope he adjusts well!

maybe a shirt or a pin that labels him as a 'big helper' would be a fun inclusion in his kit?
My son (4 years old) knows the baby is bringing him a fish..lol. He told someone at Walmart that his mom was 'having a baby and the baby is going to give him a pet fish' they were so confused..lol! When his sister was born he got a toy airplane from 'her' really daddy picked it up for him on his way to pick him up to meet the baby. It was hilarious though for all our effort to make him feel good about the baby he loved her at first but threw a temper tantrum (probably his first real one) when he realized she was coming home with us... they got along great once home, but it was hilarious.
