So for some reason I thought it would be a good idea for me to watch a video of a woman giving birth. OMG!!! I am so not ready for that! It wasn't even the laboring part that scared me. It was when they showed the baby coming out - there was his head and then BAM he shot out of her hoo-hoo like a rocket! That freaked me out!

Haha geez I am a weenie. I'm sure it won't seem so terrifying when I'm the one doing it (you know, you're in the moment and are immediately excited for what just came out of you).

I had the same reaction when I was pregnant the first time. I started having major anxiety about tearing. I talked to my midwives about it, and they suggested that I keep watching videos to desensitize myself. And, we talked a lot about different ways that they would be able to help me during the pushing phase so I didn't tear. I watched birth video after birth video on youtube (there are tons), and gradually felt better about the whole thing.

I can't watch C-section videos. I don't want to know. It happens. I go through it. I am slightly out of it. I have no clue what's going on behind the curtain. For some things, I'm a huge advocate of ignorance is bliss and this is definitely one of those cases.

Have you seen The Business of Being Born? I feel like those birth scenes are less scary and more empowering. There's also a really good book called The Baby Catcher. I read it during my first pregnancy. So good. Stories from a real midwife.

I was watching some natural birth videos on YouTube, and most of those women are so calm and make it look so easy. Whereas you watch A Baby Story or any of the shows on Discovery Health, and those women seem like they're DYING.

This!

It's such a relief when the larger parts of the baby come out and the easy parts slip through.

LOL. In my late teens and 20's I was an EMT and worked at a small hospital. I remember helping with a few deliveries, yikes, scared the crap out of me. The woman were screaming and sounded like they were in horrible pain, blood everywhere. I remember thinking what a great form of birth control it was watching a delivery. I keep trying to not think about it too much since I know baby has to come out

Funny I *had* to watch C-section videos after my daughter was born that way... I needed to know something about her birth and watching the videos and reading her birth records were the only way I could put the picture together... of course I was knocked out completely and didn't get to see her until after I woke up.. I didn't know anything about.

Jenny
watching the videos probably will help to desensitize you, try watching some water births before the hospital ones, or even just home births in general, they usually have a much more calm nature to them and that helps a bit... after you feel a little more comfortable go ahead and watch the home ones.

Haha I made DH watch a labor video. I watched it too and they broke her water with the giant hook! I was more grossed out than him apparently. He's like "It's natural" to which I say "No. That is NOT natural" hahaha. I think I'll try to watch more birth videos...but maybe not now lol

Every labor is so different, and the frame of mind going into it matters lots

I went to antenatal classes with a young girl who's husband couldn't go with her, (when I was pregnant with number 4.) They showed us a couple of birthing vids & with one of them there was this woman naturally birthing, & she screamed her HEAD OFF. The whole time S C R E A M I N G

I was seriously horrified, & incredibly thankful that I hadn't seen that BEFORE I had my first. I have had natural births & I do NOT birth like that!

I don't mind labor at all, or watching a baby come out from behind, but watching it head on and crowning, man that is a little rough and scary. I do not want to watch my own births. Leave the mirrors at the door please!

Oh my... I was thinking the same thing.... but I was going to pull out my labor video but then I said I shouldn't because I'm convincing myself that this one is going to be fast! LoL... Wishful thinking! But when it's you it really is less painful than it looks... It's a beautiful thing! With that said, I might just watch one now... THANKS! LoL.

Haha I know it's been discussed but this made me laugh and is SO true. Exactly this. You really don't care how it gets out, you just need it to happen. Now.

I'm mean. I've been making DH watch a ton of birth videos... and a variety of them too. He keeps asking me if I'm going to yell/scream during labor, and I just smile and say I DONT KNOW. Hahaha.
