I called ny OB's office to see what I could take for my cold and the secretary said Tylenol Cold & Sinus or Mucinex Cold & Sinus. Both of these products contain pseudophedrine, which is kept behind the counter and it's used for making meth or something. That can't be safe! I took something with pseudophedrine in it last year when I was sick and it gave me insomnia and a horrible headache. Has anyone else been instructed to take these meds?
So here's what my Dr list says..sudafed only after 12 weeks. My safe meds list from the Dr has ...tylenol, chlor-trimeton (no clue what that is), robitussin cough syrup, and benadryl. Psuedophedrine is a category C drug, which means they don't really know and it may cause harm. Maybe they meant the kind without psuedopherine? We have 2 formulations at the store here..
Pseudophedrinr has long been considered ok. Recently they have been reassessing it and it is recommended to stay away from it in the first trimester especially if you have any history of high blood pressure. I would assess need/risk. I think I would take it if I had a sinus infection with a lot of pain but not if I just had congestion
I guess I'm just nervous. The last time I got meds from behind the counter with pseudophedrine I was up all night with a horrible headache. I guess I'd rather just suffer rather than risk my babies health.
