I definitely feel annoyed about mine. I'm not allowed to save up my vacation days. I have to use them up every year so i was a little surprised to only be offered a week of paid maternity leave when they're not hiring anyone else while i'm gone.

On one hand, i know some jobs don't offer any pay, so i should be grateful. But when people higher up constantly leave my office because they need to "mow their lawn", "bake a pie" or "go to a football game" and still get a full paycheck it's really hard to not feel annoyed.

Meanwhile i had to take a day off this week because my son had pinkeye. I didn't get paid for that or else i wouldn't be able to take my full 6 weeks off.

So agree with that. Wish we had paid maternity leave like other countries. There aren't very many benefits for mothers here. I've read of one progressive country where the mother can take the first year b/c the govt recognizes how important that is.

yes, i'm one of the unpaid and i need to check in on short term disability to see what's up with that. it sucks that i have to leave my kids to go take care of someone else's as a teacher. my family has made a lot of personal sacrifices for me to have the "privilege" of being one of the lowest paid but constantly disrespected public servants.

Sorry, i hope you don't think i was being bratty! I certainly don't think paid maternity leave is "owed" to me when it's not owed to everyone. I'm just frustrated with my office and how this was handled when i know it could of be done much differently.

If they were to come now, I'd have to take a couple of weeks to recup from c/s surgery but I'd have to return to work right away. The closer they are to the scheduled surgery, the better financially (and obviously for health).
Shana.. teachers are so underpaid in the US.. I think some States are still OK but it is shocking to hear you will be having twins and unpaid Here in Ontario female teachers get a full year with 60% pay. My husband who is a male teacher only gets 2 days off.. so that isnt too good but at least he has that.
My husband researched being a teacher in the states.. especially Florida (because it is warm ) but the salary for the amount of work, stress, preparation involved doesn't match up compared to what he gets in Ontario so we are stuck here

no, it wasn't bratty. considering how important the first few years are and the impact of children on society, you would think maternity leave would be better.
