I know all insurances cover the NT scan if you have family members with Downs and/or if you're over 35 but I was curious to if any insurances cover the test if don't qualify with the two things I just mentioned. I have Tricare...hubby is military and they won't cover it. My doctor offered it to me, but at around $1000, that's just a little too steep. So, does your insurance cover it?

Yes, we have Blue Cross Blue Shield.
That's crazy that Tricare won't back it. That's nuts. I think there's an example of a bit of blur between morals and politics.

Yeah...tell me about it. They will only do it if you Dr. deems it medically necessary. I wish I could have it done though since I think it at least gives you more piece of mind and the ability to get more prepared. Most of the time Tricare will only cover one ultrasound too...at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan. I was able to get one earlier to 'date' the pregnancy.

I called Blue Cross Blue Shield last week to make sure, and they said they do cover it. Otherwise, it would've been about $300 here. (I'm having mine done on Friday!)

Tricare does cover it but as you said they cover ultrasounds that your doctor deems medically necessary. You're right, most doctors won't do them just because but if you have serious concerns they will do it. And the one ultrasound thing is simply how tricare words it but as long as a doctor codes your ultrasound correctly they will cover as many as you need.

DH is military also (I have Tricare Standard) and I was covered for the scan. Are you sure you aren't covered? I would call and ask. I also was covered for the Cystic Fibrosis test if I got it on base but I havent gotten it yet.

We have BCBS and it's covered 100% with no copay. I called and made sure when we were trying to decide whether to have the scan or not. We eventually decided against it.

I have prime so I'm not sure if that's what makes the difference. I will call and see what I can get out of someone on the phone...thanks for the heads up.

Ok, so I called Tricare. They will cover it but your doctor does have to deem it necessary by meeting the requirement of being over 35 and/or having a family member with Downs. So since I don't meet either, my doctor does not say it's necessary. Apparently there are some doctors who will code it to qualify to be covered even if you don't meet the requirements...just not mine. Thanks for the input ladies.

maybe it's just me, but why do people want to get this test, i understand that its to see if the baby has downs, but would you really terminate if your baby did(please don't answer, i really don't want to know) that's why most people get the test.
If you don't need it, why get it. That's my motto with all test.
