When does the second trimester actually start? I'm reading so many different opinions everywhere. 12weeks? 13weeks? or 14weeks?

I use the end of the 13th week. I was told once (and this makes sense to me) that the 1st trimester goes to the end of the 13th week, the 2nd goes to the end of the 26th week and the 3rd goes until the end of the 39th week, which puts you at your due date of 40 weeks. Technically you don't leave the 3rd trimester until you deliver, but thats kind of a duh, thing!

I'm thinking that I'll stick with the 13th week being the start of it. Seems I'm not the only one who is unsure and is seeing conflicting answers too.

I think technically it is at 13 1/3 weeks (exactly one third of the pregnancy) that the first trimester ends. What to Expect uses 13 weeks as the end, though, so that is what I have always gone by.

I went by my what to expect book, 14 weeks starts the 2nd trimester. It was just easier to go by the book so I didn't get off track with chapters and everything.

I am 12 weeks today so I would love to say 12, but 13 1/3 makes the most sense...

I heard all 3 versions. I beleive that it is really the 14th week that marks the beginning of the 2nd tri. However, I've been feeling MUCH better since the beginning of the 13th week.

i think i went with 13w3d officially, lol. 12 weeks doesn't seem quite right b/c that gets you to 36 weeks which isn't even full term. so for all intensive purposes i'm going with 13weeks, there is a lot of conflict over trimesters though. lol

40 divided by 3 is 13.3, but our books must use 14 just because it's easier.

From what Ive read, it depends on if you are calculating based on development, gestation, or conception. It seems like most people go by gestation.

by Development:

This uses actual developmental stages to divide up a pregnancy. From LMP to 12 weeks the embryo develops all the major organs and becomes a fetus. From 12 weeks to 27 weeks the fetus continues developing and reaches viability. From 27 weeks on the fetus finishes development and prepares for delivery. Here the second trimester begins at 12w 0d and the third at 27w 0d.

by Gestation:

With this method you take the 40 weeks of gestation and divide by three. Here the second trimester begins at 13w 3d and the third at 26w 6d.

by Conception:

This method is where you take the 38 weeks of post conception development, divide by three, and add two weeks. Here the second trimester begins at 14w 5d and the third at 27w 3d.

I hate when people ask how many months I am. Don't they know we measure in weeks? I can't do that kind of math in my head! LOL
