I have an ultrasound tomorrow with a specialist. When I went in for my 20 week ultrasound the doctor was a witch she was rude and very judgmental. She isnt more normal doctor, just the doctor at the ultrasound clinic. Well, according to my doctor she is on some anti-overweight campaign and because I am overweight she was rude. She was just taking all the measurements she needed, didnt ask me if I had any questions or anything and rudly explained that since I am over weight I am considered high risk and I have to go to a specialist because they have to look at his heart more in depth. Well this scared the crap out of me because I thought something was wrong. When she was done the tech came in and I was talking to her and she said nothing is wrong or abnormal with the baby that its just because of my weight that they have to check it more.

So Im just wondering if anyone else has experienced this sort of thing. Im kind of nervous about tomorrow, because of the thought that anything could possible be wrong. But Im also excited to see him again.

My OB sends all of her patients to the high risk specialist for their ultrasound, no matter if they are thin or overweight. They have more experienced ultrasound techs and a more "HD" ultrasound setup.

My tech commented that I was an easy scan because I am thin and mentioned that her "fluffier" (her words, not mine) patients were more difficult to get clear imaging from, though it IS possible, just takes time and patience. I wouldn't worry!

I am just so sorry that tech did that to you. I had no problems and no comments about my weight (I certainly am over weight) I hope you have a good appointment with some real answers instead of judgement.

Uh, no. I am definitely overweight and there have been no extra tests or anything because of it. I was of course told to make sure that I exercise and eat right because being overweight often times leads to GD (not always, but often), but other than that, nothing special is being done.

It sounds like that lady is just a witch. I hope you get a great report from this other doctor that you can shove in her face!

I think she's not only a b, but it sounds like the doctor and tech at your u/s place aren't very good at u/s

I am glad this isn't your regular doctor! Fat bias is a real and often dangerous thing when a provider is the one that has it!
Plus-Size Pregnancy Website Index This is a good site to get information of what you might need to consider being a over weight pregnant woman.

I am pretty sure I would have gone off! I have been overweight for all of my pregnancies and have never had an issue.

Just take it as another chance to see the baby.

I was rude to her, as soon as she got the high risk sentence out of her mouth I told her that she needed to calm down and not be so judgemental because I have actually lost 9 lbs and havent gained any weight. She just walked out of the room and had the tech come talk to me. Im super grateful she isnt my regular doctor. Thanks for all your encouraging words. She made me feel as if im 400 lbs. I am definitely overweight but not to the extreme she made it seem that I am.

Rheanna, that doctor needs to go! I posted a couple weeks ago that my doctor's office called to tell me that my ultrasound wasn't clear in some shots. I was worried and called to find out what was up. The nurse was super nice and explained to me that the heart is one of the hardest things to see and that the doctor who reviews the ultrasound wants a clearer shot after a couple of weeks as the baby gets bigger. I asked if, because I am overweight it would make it harder to see. She said that CAN be the reason but that I shouldn't worry about that. She also explained that it wasn't a big deal to take another peek at the baby.

My doctor's office, especially my doctor, has never made me feel bad about being overweight. I have never been considered high risk because of it. There are heavy women who have perfectly healthy pregnancies and very thin women who do NOT. The site Meghan linked is very good (I've seen it on the ICAN network) and gives some good empowerment tips.

You are so much more than the number on the scale. We all are. I beat myself up enough about my weight-I don't need some heartless doctor to do it. I'm fully aware of my weight, and if he expressed a genuine concern, I'd listen and take his advice if warranted. But I don't let my weight determine how good of a mother (and person) I am.

(rant over)

Rheanna - I can't say my u/s tech was rude at all, but i also have to go for a second check of the heart for the same reason so I wouldn't think anything is wrong with the baby - it is true that a little more padding makes it harder to see some of the heart. I had my first u/s at 18 weeks to rule out Spina Bifida and the tech couldn't get a clear look at the heart. She kindly said it was because I was too early (they normally won't do the anatomy scans until 20 weeks unless there is a previous defect they want to check for early). But I know it was because I'm heavier and she just couldn't see it as well. Look - we know we are overweight (or at least I do) but any healthcare professional should be respectful regardless. We are still patients, and moms to be, and my OB monitors my weight issues and any extra concerns she has, but is always very subtle about it.

I'm really sorry you had to go through that. I know with my first I had to go for all my ultrasounds to a high risk doctor and it was always good experience and I got lots of pictures super friendly doctor and techs so I hope it's the same for you.

Love that despite the rudeness you're able to focus on the silver lining of seeing Carson again, and lets be honest - we all want as many sneak peeks as possible!

Enjoy seeing your little boy again and hope tomorrow's experience is a far nicer one!

I hope everything goes great today...though I know it will.

That ultrasound witch should be fired. There is no excuse for her to be mean.

I don't think it's necessarily a weight thing that messes up a u/s, yanno? My u/s tech couldn't get a clear shot of my LOs heart and I'm kinda skinny (according to them, pft! I say) -- I think that hag was just being nasty since the tech couldn't get a clear image. Grrr. Hate nasty people. I gotta get re-scanned too, but they're just gonna do it next month when I come back.

Wow...That is one of those moments where you wish you could have a free pass at punching someone. I am sooo sorry you had to deal with such rude people!! Apparently others don't realize we are already having panic attacks because of our weight, I guess they think they need to remind us more when we are reminded everyday we look in the mirror. But at least you will have a clearer better look at you lil one and hopefully they will be able to give you some great print outs of the US. Good luck chicka!
