There are only two OB's in the entire hospital, so I have a 50/50 shot of getting my doctor. Those are pretty good odds, but still it really sucks that he could wind up being delivered by a total stranger. Am I the only one thinking about this?

Maybe it's a little early (or a lot early. lol) but I'd say it crosses my mind at least once a week, if my doctor will be there or not. Every time I see my OB (which has been a lot lately) it makes me wonder even more and I hate that I can't count on it. lol

I think someone said that their mother was going to catch the baby. Will that be at a hospital, or a home birth? It never even occurred to me to ask if DH could catch him. I know he wants to cut the cord, but I bet he'd be thrilled to death if he could help deliver.

What are everyone else's odds? Or am I truly the only one this bothers? lol

Ugggg my odds are like 1 in 6 to get my Dr. Which is why she told me she would induce me so I could plan to have her. My biggest thing is I don't want one of the male Drs. And one of the two I go to church with and have known for forever...so that is weird. The other one I've talked to a few women who had him as their primary dr. and like three of the four, he let their babies get way to big, I'm talking 10lbs to 11lbs, than had to do c-sections. This is while he told them all along their babies were 8 to 8 and a half pounds and they could deliver vaginally.

So I don't want him...I'm highly considering being induced so I can make sure I have MY dr, and not someone I don't trust. I mean if I go into labor and it's one of the guys...and I absolutely refuse to have a male dr...I wonder what they would do?

And that's just me being weird. I've never had a male ob or gyno and the thought just irks me, I know some people don't care, but I dunno, I do.

I can totally understand! I think if something rubs you the wrong way, you don't need a reason b/c you can't help how you feel. When my first OB retired and I found out my new OB was a woman I was freaked out. Around here, you always hear that women aren't as gentle - but I really love my OB and I'm more comfortable with her than I ever was with my last one. I really feel like she listens and understands more. She's had three babies, so she really 'gets it', I guess.

I... would... die if I had to birth an 11lb baby. What is that? lol. To be honest, my dog only weighs 4lbs and the thought of pushing something his size out makes me feel how I imagine men feel when they see another guy get hit in the junk. I know the body is made to do it, but I guess until I have actually given birth, I will never know what to expect.

As far as getting stuck with a guy, I really don't know... I can't even imagine how I would handle that situation. I'd hate to be in that position. I'm sure they can't force a doctor on you, but hopefully you get your own or at least someone you'd be comfortable with.

There are 4 OBs in my office and with Emily, I ended up with the only one that I hadn't had much contact with and the only male in the office. I really wasn't that happy about it, but to be honest at that point I didn't care. I was just ready to get the show on the road! He turned out to be amazingly caring and compassionate. I'm actually going to find out tomorrow if I can schedule him to do my c-section. I adore him and can't imagine being under the care of anyone else.

I don't know what the odds are, but my doctor assists to almost all of her patient's labor. I really don't understand how it works because she follows me in a clinic and will be at the hospital with me...

I have like a 1 in 15, I may ask her to induce, I love my midwife. Also I have a 1 in 15 to get a certain male OB that I can not stand, I will close my legs and wait for his shift to end if he is there. There is another male who started with me and my first who was amazing, I wouldnt mind him but I'll be getting a Midwife I hope. I think DH would cry himself to death if he could catch his daughter, I think I'll ask, the joys of midwifes is that they are so flexible! Good question!

There are 3 doctors in my doctor's "network." They don't all practice together but they all work together. My doctor did say that she tries to deliver all her own babies unless she just CAN'T. It's not so bad though. One of the other doctors in my doctor's network is marrie to MY boss (haha) and the other one is my specialists brother-in-law. Though I'd rather have my own doctor. That is why I picked her....

My dr will deliver my baby (well my Peri) he delivers all his patients baby's. I pull him away from heading home to go eat dinner on, y last delivery. He didn't mind at all. His family knows what his job is and knows if one of his patients is ready to deliver he has to go.

For those that r worried, is it possible to ask ur dr if when u go into labor they can come in when ur "close" and deliver ur baby for u??

Yeah, I've wondered about that too. My current doc delivered my last one, but she was not my doctor then and I'd never seen her before. But I liked her, so I switched to her this time around. But the chances of her delivering this one are not good - there are around 8 doctors in the practice.

As for catching the baby, I had asked to have DH do that last time, but my regular doc said no way, it's not safe. But it was still in my birth plan that they put in my chart. When the other doctor saw it when I was delivering, she was fine with it and offered to let DH catch the baby - so in my experience, it depends on the doctor.

I hope you get the doctor you want!

There are 5 doctors at my office. I've met 3 of them, but will see all 5 before I deliver. I actually like that, because chances are I will know the doctor that delivers me, rather than taking the chance that my doctor doesn't make it and a stranger delivers my baby. That actually happened when I was born, my moms doctor was on his way and they told him to go home because they thought it was false labor. 30 minutes later I was born.

Most doctors around here come in when you go into labor and they aren't on call. Mine said she would induce me a week early so I can plan on her.

I go to a practice affiliated with the civilian hospital and there are about 5 OBGYNs and 3 midwifes there. I am comfortable with all of them delivering my baby, which is surprising for me because usually I find flaws in doctors.

My doc is on call and will come in to deliver baby

It definitely depends on the doc if they let you catch baby, DH really wants to but most the obs here would never allow it

There are 4 OBs in my doctor's practice and I will meet with each one of them before I deliver so I can feel comfortable in case my doctor is not on call. It doesn't bother me that much, all the doctors seem really great.

I guess I always pictured it like the Cosby show. Where they call him on his home phone and he meets them at the hospital no matter what time it is. haha. Now a days it's the answering service telling you "I'm sorry, I can only page the on-call doctor". There are doctors here who will come no matter who's on call, and though mine isn't one of them, I still adore her. And I know that if she misses the birth, she will swing by and check on us as soon as she is able.

Getting the other Dr will be a road bump int he birth plan, but I think once the baby is in my arms, I won't care if Big Foot delivered him.

I'm pretty much guaranteed getting my doctor for the delivery. He is in practice by himself and delivers all of his patients.

I don't have to worry too much unless he is out of state or something. He takes turns with some other dr's in town, but he gives me a card that tells the nurses to call him even if he's not on call. He just started this with my last baby. I place a lot of trust in him to take care of me and my babies. I would be very upset if I had someone else.
