I was at my Dr. last week and they gave me one of the free formula "welcome" kit things. I don't use formula, but love getting all the free stuff and then donating it to women's shelters. The nurse mentioned that as of the first of the year they won't be allowed to give out samples any longer. I believe this is because of the Sunshine Act. I wanted to link to a website to explain this, but can't find a good one that isn't all legal mumbo jumbo. Basically the act makes all medical companies keep track of all the stuff they give away, the value of it and who it goes to. The act starts in 2012 and I think the first reports are due in the first quarter of 2013.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out to anyone who got samples in the past at their Drs. office and are expecting them again this time around. I signed up for Simalac's strong mom program today in hopes of still getting a few samples I can donate.

I have a friend on PAL who was looking for coupons for formula. She could use them if you can. I can PM you if you like.

IMO, I'm glad Dr offices aren't giving samples anymore. I gave DD the pre-made formula bottles and it made her very fussy. I did it maybe 4 or 5 times. I got all my samples from the Dr and the hospital. I think it makes mom's less likely to succeed at breastfeeding because formula requires a bit less work at first and a tired mama is likely to go for it for a break. I know I did at first.
Though I'm glad companies are still sending coupons/ samples upon request for those who DO want to use formula.

I think that it is sad that they will not be giving samples. DD1 needed so many different formulas before finding on that worked and we spent so much money on it. If we could have tried a small sample first would have helped us out.

I don't think it makes women less likely to bf. I know for DD2 I bf for 8 weeks 23/7 straight and it was the worst 8 weeks of my life! I didn't even have a good bond with her until she was 10 weeks old and I HATE myself for that but I was pressured into keeping up with bfing her. I wish I was not so pressured for so long and went with my gut.

Not all women, but I think it's statistically proved.. Not sure?
All I can really say is in my experience, I found myself going for formula whenever we went out because I was too scared to NIP. After a while and after finding out that ready to feed formula bottles made her sick, I started getting more serious about BF'ing. If I hadn't had the samples I was given, I wouldn't have used the formula at all. And I know a girl who did the same and then her son refused outright to BF anymore. She tried and tried and eventually gave up.
So I guess I'm biased
Though I didn't think of the foster parenting and needing formula then!
