We give Aubrey one bottle of pumped milk almost every day to get her used to the bottle before I have to go back to work, to allow DH a chance to feed her, and to give me a short break in the evening when she's cluster feeding. As she's gotten bigger (she's 4 weeks old tomorrow) she's started to fuss while taking the bottle and collapse the nipple. We're using Playtex drop-in nursers. I have suspected that I have an oversupply and an overactive let-down and the flow from the bottle is slower and frustrates her. The last time she got a bottle, she was very fussy, so halfway through the feed we switched out the slow flow nipple for a fast flow nipple (we don't have any medium flow nipples on hand) and she ate so much better.

Everything I've read says to avoid switching to fast flow nipples with breastfed babies... and the age suggestion on the fast-flow nipple is 3-6 months and older.

Has anyone had similar experiences? I don't want to perpetually frustrate Aubrey- but I also don't want her to develop a strong preference for bottles.... but based upon my particular baby I think that switching to faster flow nipples might be the right move.

I had to also switch to a faster nipple on DS bottle since he kept collapsing the nipple on the bottle (had to get him used to it since I'll be going back to work full time first week of July). I use the Born Free bottles. He seems much happier with the stage two (3-6 month) nipple. We had to switch him around 1 month old, he's 2 months now. He still breastfeeds fine.

I say do what works for you. I too have an oversupply and fast let-down so we may need to use faster flow nipples too, since that's what she's used to! I know she gets very frustrated with my boob. LOL

I needed really fast nipples with my other 2 babies. They hardly ever did take a bottle, but when they did I used the fastest I could get. Once, in desperation dh had to bite a small hole in nipple lol. Thats not too safe though. Always so confused since everything said to use the slowest.

Every baby is different and all the books and what we read don't always work for every baby. Do what is right for you baby

I say do what works. We use the slow flow nipple with Jacob and he seems to do okay. He just doesn't really like the bottle, I think because it's not mommy. It always takes a bit to get him to drimk from bottle and with me he will latch right on.

I have this same problem.

But with bottles the slow flow seams to fast for him.
