This is a good question and I'm interested to hear what others say, because we just started yesterday! So I gave him about 1 tbsp of rice cereal made very, very thin with breast milk. I plan to feed him only in the evenings (about dinner time) right now, increasing the amount each time, but making sure he saves room to nurse at the end. We will also be introducing a new food each week from now on; veggies first and then maybe around 7 months, fruit. For right now, I don't think he really needs it in terms of nutrition, so I'm not going to feed him more than a few tbsp every day until he's at least 6 months old. I only started now because I'm off work for the summer, the doctor said I could, and it's a relaxed time for introducing something new.

We started with bananas a few days ago. He still has somewhat of a tongue thrust reflex, so most of it went down his chin, but he seemed to like it. We've given 2-3 teaspoons each day and will try either pears or sweet potatoes tonight. We're skipping rice cereal, mostly because a)DS1 never liked it and b) it sounds boring, LOL.

We tried rice cereal at 4 months, didnt like it, as I expected. Added some pears and still didnt really care for it so a week later I tried again with sweet potato and pumpkin... LOVES IT... and is good at chew/swallowing now (doesn't thrust it out) She started having about 2 tablespoons now its about 1/4-1/2 of a cup and just at dinner time.

Olivia has had rice cereal and she just tried carrots but I had to put rice cereal in it. We just ate a whole thing of baby good. I eased her into the carrots she didn't love it but didn't hate it. Now she seems to like it.

This is pretty much the way to do it. It will definitely not be the major source of nutrition/calories for a while. So if a day comes that it seems like too much hassle, just skip it!

We will start soon--once my vacation starts. Jack is definitely interested. I was eating string cheese while nursing him and he stopped eating, started at me and then slowly grabbed for my cheese!
