I'm pretty concerned about my Alex's head control and wanted opinions and to see where everyone's LOs were in the way of head/neck control. He rolls over both ways, holds his head up high and steady when laying on his tummy, but can not sit in a bumbo unassisted because most of the time his head will go back. He is about 4 1/2 months now. I feel like ds1's neck control was much better at this age. I don't know if it's just a normal difference, or if I need to make an appt. with his pedi to check him out.

At this stage my first had marvelous control, but she's always been absurdly strong. She could support her weight on her legs at 1 month. This one is pretty steady, but she still has her bobble head moments. If she turns her head too quickly, she starts to tip over. She can't completely roll over at will still(from her back to her front to her back), but she has rolled over on accident. She's mastered just the back to front.

Babies develop at different rates, but always the same order: tracking with their eyes, supporting their neck, reaching for things, rolling over, sitting up, crawling, and finally walking. Until Winter can roll over completely all the time at will, she's not going to have that total neck control or ability to sit up most likely, and that's probably what's going on with yours. Gotta master the previous step. =)

When you lay him on his back and pull him to sitting by grasping his hands, does his head come up with his body?

DD has pretty solid head control and can sit unassisted but she's always been crazy strong too. I bet he's fine, especially if he's rolling over. Like the others said, they develop at their own speed;it's probably best not to compare.

Claire has always had very good head control. Her doctor is really impressed with her strength. However, she rarely rolls over and has only rolled from back to front twice. I think they all develop at different rates. I would not be concerned about a wobbly head at 4.5 months.

Thanks ladies. I guess I was just concerned because DS1 had such stronger head control at this age. In all other ways, Alex is very strong though so I'm sure he's doing fine. He started rolling from tummy to back consistently at 1 week old (I was in total shock when he did that lol), rolls over well from back to tummy, keeps his head in line with his body when pulling him into a sitting position. I'm sure his head/neck strength will catch up soon.

My DS cant sit unassisted yet either. I'm not worried bc I know babies all progresscat different rates. He can roll over and lift his head when he's on his belly. Yours will progress when he's ready. Just enjoy every moment!!!

He's got great head control but wasn't able to sit in the bumbo until the last 2 weeks. For some reason, the bumbo throws his head back. I don't think it's anything for you to worry about. Try again in a few weeks your baby will probably get it soon!
