We're not going to have an actual party, but I'd still like to do a cake and have our two friends come over so they and the rest of the family can "see" what the baby is with a gender reveal cake.

My problem is that I don't know how to make it. I love baking, and can bake almost anything, but I've never tried putting a specific color in the middle of a cake.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to do it?
I was thinking of just making the entire cake the right color and then using marshmallow fondant to cover it, and hopefully keep it so no one would be able to see the color until after it's cut.
Marshmallow fondant looks easy enough to make, I just don't have any of the fancy tools that people in the videos use.

Also, on a humorous note, is it wrong to hope the baby is a Boy just because I'm almost positive I have no Red food coloring? Hahahahaha

You could do a two layer cake and make the bottom layer pink or blue and then ice it.... or you can make a 3 layer cake and make the middle layer pink/blue....

or you can make cupcakes.... and then pipe pink or blue icing in the middle of each cupcake...

or even better I found a website that walks you through making gender reveal cupcakes.... and I am sure to make a gender reveal cake you would do the same thing but in a cake pan.....

You wouldn't need red food coloring, you could just get a strawberry cake mix You could also get blue or pink sprinkles and add them when you're done mixing, then the cake would look colorful in the inside without any additional work.

I was going to say use food coloring in the cake mix, but def just go with a strawberry cake mix for a girl, much easier! Then you could do blue coloring if its a boy.
