My MIL is a very talented quilter, and wants me to save Winter's baby clothes for a quilt. In each block would be a tiny dress cut from each outfit, a really cute idea. I'm having a problem saving clothes, though. I go to this thing in town, a Christian parenting center. For every meeting you have, you get mommy bucks that you can use in their store. You can get diapers, wipes, burp cloths, breastfeeding equipment, exersaucers, toys, baby books, carseats, cradles, baby clothes, strollers... You name it, they have it. They give away the baby food and formula for free.
I am all about getting free diapers and wipes, and when I get all I can get (We might buy one package for one of our kids a month ), I usually have a dollar left every week, and the clothes are 5 for a dollar. So I have been stocking up. I have so many cute, name brand, barely used (or new with tags!) outfits for my girl by now. So I really feel like I should donate all these cute outfits back when Winter outgrows them. I've already donated all the onsies and the few outfits she had for newborn to 3 mths.
On one hand: really cute quilt made from really nice dresses, raincoats, etc. It would be SO CUTE!!! And it would have all sorts of neat textures for little hands to play with. The other: there are some ladies out there that would love to be able to let their child have all these cute clothes. I raided them this week. Raincoat, brand new dresses, and a hounds tooth coat and dress that looks like it was worn by Mary Tyler Moore.
So what would you do? cut up the clothes for a quilt because there will always be more, or would you donate them back for more children and parents to enjoy?
Aw, man, what a hard choice! I feel your pain. My mom made me a similar quilt, but I think it was with clothes from when I was older (I remember some of the outfits, which is cool). Maybe now, while Winter is little and outgrowing her clothes so fast, you could donate the clothes back (keeping stained ones for the quilt), but when she gets bigger and she manages to damage her clothes before she outgrows them, you could save parts of those outfits for the quilt. She will LOVE it!
Ok, first off. Hounds tooth coat and dress a la MTM?! Soooooo cute! The idea of a quilt is so cute too! I saw this somewhere and wanted to do it but I'm not nearly good enough with sewing. I also saw the idea for a book made out of baby clothes that kids can practice using snaps, buttons, zippers etc with and I thought that was a great idea too. I wish I was better with stuff like that.
I'd maybe keep a few favorite outfits for the quilt and then just keep collecting those as she grows until there is enough for a quilt.
I love baby clothes quilts. I really want to have one made for Claire but I can't sew so I'll have to pay to have someone make one I guess hah. I would maybe keep your absolute favorite outfits or outfits that have special meaning and donate the rest back.
