It is really hard naming our 6th son. I really like the name Matthew, but when I was pregnant w/ my oldest 17 years ago my cousins wife was also pregnant. Her last name is mathews and they named their son Matthew, we used to see them all the time like monthly sometimes more. Our kid's were never really close though.
In 2003 they divorced and my cousin remarried and took the kids w/ his new wife (she's in the airforce) and moved out of state. So now we see them maybe 1 time a year. Do you think it would be weird if we used Matthew for our baby? We aren't close to them and I don't rally talk to my cousin besides saying hello if they are in town. His parents do live in out town though and we see them more often like 6 -8 times a year.

I don't think it's weird at all, especially because you never really see the other Matthew and he is so much older. If you love it, use it

I don't think it's weird at all. If it's a name you love, and you aren't particularly close to them, I'd use it. 17 years is a big gap between them. I wouldn't give it a second thought, you've obviously loved the name for a LONG time. Time to use it!

I think it would be fine too. That's kind of far enough removed that I doubt it would be an issue.

I dont see how sharing names is a big deal there is to many ppl in the world for it not to happen. its not like your immediately related or staying in the same house so whats it really matter. if you like it use it they don't have it trademarked.

I agree, if you want to use Matthew, it wouldn't be weird to do so

Not at all! My husband comes from a huge Irish family (his mom is 1 of 7, his dad is 1 of 14) and he has 2 cousins named Timothy on his mom's side.

In fact, his grandmother in Ireland named 2 of her sons Thomas (the oldest of the 14 chose to go by his middle name so when she gave birth to her 9th son, she decided to just name him Thomas again because she likes it so much).

That's funny-my FIL is Jose, and has an older brother who is also Jose. The older one is actually the oldest of the kids and has a different father than the rest. Apparently both dads wanted the name Jose for their son

Thanks everyone. It hasn't been a name I've always liked there are a couple others I like to. I kind of like Lucas more but I really like the way Matthew Lucas sounds.

I would use it, DH grandfather was Antonio, his oldest unle is Antonio and every first born son is Antonio. He has 7 first cousins with the smae name, 5 of which have the smae surname!

Matthew, or its spanish equivalent, is our one and only name on our list too!
