Any doing this or did it with one of their previous little ones? We looked into it with Akadia but in the end decided to skip it. Not sure yet what we'll do this time. I need to research it a little better.

I dont know. I am torn. I know I wont be doing a private bank. At the same time I dont know if we should do delayed cord clamping or if we can even do both of them..

We banked Liam's cord blood with Cord Blood Registry and they're giving us a $400 discount to bank Nolan's cord blood. Before we had Liam, someone I knew's daughter died of leukemia because of not finding a donor match. That scared me into definitely banking my babies' cord blood. It's expensive but I have no regrets and I will be banking all of my children's cord blood.

Does anyone know a ball park figure how much it costs to bank cord blood? Is it an annual fee? Monthly fee?

Yes, at my hospital you can bank your baby's cord blood but it's there for anyone who needs it and in return if you ever need it there will be some available for you. It is also free. We did bank our other children's because of cost.

With CBR, without our discount it would be $2195. They have payment plans of up to 48 months (I think).

There's also an annual $125 storage fee. There are discounts if you can pay for multiple years up front.

I plan to delay cord clamping and encapsulate my placenta, so I don't think there will be any blood left to bank.

The way that i understand cord blood banking is there are public banks and private bank. In public banks for use by anyone in need whose cell type is a match, and in private banks where it is only available to the family of the child who donated. Public banks are a donated type of thing and private you have to pay the annual fee plus what ever the cost is to store it. If your child god forbid needs cord blood for leukemia or sickle cell disease, He/she wouldn't be able to use his own cord blood because the disease is a genetic thing and that wouldn't help how ever if you used a public bank another infant who had the same cells as your child you could use that to help treat it. If I am wrong on this please some one correct me. LOL If we do end up doing banking I will be using a public bank.

I hope I don't sound like a snob, but there is a difference between public and private banking. With public, there is no guarantee that there will be a match. I don't know much about sickle cell, since it's not a disease that either of us carry, I'll talk about leukemia, which we also don't carry but doesn't need inheritance to happen. If a child was born with cancerous cells in their marrow, then their stem cells are no good. But if it's something that they develop at say, 5 years old, the banked stem cells that are non-cancerous are there for them later on and they're a perfect match.

Banking publicly or privately is better than not banking at all, in my opinion. But, there are benefits to having a perfect match for your child. Also, in the future it is postulated that there will be more that can be done with the stem cells. That is why I bank.

They didn't have this that I remember with my older two... I thought about doing it, but it is cost prohibitive for me. I should look into whether there is a public banking option here...

I believe we will be doing it but I'm still not sure if we will do public or private. I'm hoping we can swing private.

Here the only cord blood banks are public, which is fine because it is extremely rare that you'd need your child's cord blood for your child. In the vast majority of cases it helps someone else. However if there is a sibling born later and the cord blood is still banked and you need it for the sibling it can still help.
So we are doing it

My husband and I decided on the donation route. We are doing it through Be The Match. Be The Match: Hope for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, blood cancer and sickle cell disease

We are also both registered donors through them. Our niece lost her battle to Leukemia 11/24/11 & we wanted to do something to honor her memory as our LO is due 11/30/12.
