I've been breastfeeding for the past 3 weeks and had no idea how much LO was eating. I just know he was ALWAYS on the breast. Just a few days ago, we got him to take the bottle of breast milk. Now I can see how much he eats....and I don't think it's normal! He is a BEAST! At this last feeding, he took down SEVEN OUNCES and didn't spit much of it up. Granted, he didn't eat much through the night. He would wake up and be on the breast for 5 minutes or less and fall back asleep. I read you should multiply baby's weight by 2.5 and that's how many ounces he should be eating in a 24 hour period but I have no idea how much he weighs now...Dr apt next week. HOW MUCH DOES YOUR BABY EAT????

I offer to nurse every 1.5-2 hours unless DD is asleep. If she's asleep I wake her up at the 3 hour mark (she usually wakes up on her own though). When she takes a bottle, it is usually around 2 oz, then usually I have to top her off by nursing when I get home or very shortly after (like within the hour).

When I worked in daycare most babies between 6 weeks (when we started) and 4 months took on average 4 oz per feeding every 2-3 hours of breast milk. Most breastfed babies I had in my class never took more then 6 oz per feeding every 4 hours. That was usually in the second half of the first year. A few babies took 8 oz per feeding, but those babies usually didn't nurse at all (exclusive pumping).

I'm assuming at this point, E is getting on average 3 oz per "full" nursing session (not just the quickie "snacks").

I'm guessing he really doens't need 7 ounces of milk, and I doubt he is getting that much. He's probably only eatint 2-3 ounces per feeding, but since its easier and faster in a bottle, he eats until his nursing/sucking needs are met and is taking in a lot.
