I wont lie and say I am not scared to death about this...

Seems Raini's soft spot MAY be closing alittle too soon and we were referred to a specialist in Memphis to have it checked out. Apt is Nov 13th, I have to wait a whole month and try not to panic. If it is in fact closing too much, she will have to have surgery.... Im so upset right now.

Im doing research on it and I know I shouldn't, it'll just make it worse, but I hate not knowing.

Had anyone had this happen to anyone you know?

My ped says it may be the right size for her as all babies are different but on an average level it shouldnt be closed as much as it is. She tried to reassure me that it would be fine but the moment she said specialist everything else she told me kinda faded out.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. There has been at least one other baby here whose pedi thought her sutures might be fusing early. Thankfully that wasn't the case. I hope that's the case for Raini as well. I hope hte next month flies by for you. I know researching that can drive you a little crazy. I know a few JM babies have had this time, but I don't know which board you'd search out info/support on it or if any of those moms are around anymore.

Actually, I have a very close experience with this - my nephew's soft spot started closing too soon. He needed surgery and is a-okay now. Big, healthy 6 year old football player

My DD just had a CT done about 2 weeks ago for that. She had developed a ridge on her head that concerned her pedi that her sutures might be closing early. The CT came back fine. There were no problem at all with her sutures. Amelia's ridge is due to a different problem (plagiocephaly caused by torticollis). From what I've read and been told, having the sutures close early is actually pretty rare, so hopefully your pedi is just being extra cautious and everything is ok. Like Celry mentioned in her post, there's also another mommy on here who went through the exact same thing too, and her DD's CT came back fine as well.

So sorry you have to wait a month to be seen. Waiting in a situation like this always sucks. Praying it flys by super fast for you and that everything turns out fine for your little sweetheart!

It isnt supposed to close all the way until they are a year old which is when their brain stops growing. if hers closes all the way, then her brain will not have room to grow properly. If its closed, they will have to intentionally fracture her skull and remove some bone to make room for the brain to grow.

Thank you, your reply makes me feel so much better. My pedi says its very likely that there is cartilidge there that makes it seem like its closed when it could very well be growing properly. She says this is just a precaution. Im hoping and praying, everything is just fine, though I know if its closed, the surgery can be done safely and all be well. I just cant imagine having to watch my 4 mth old go through surgery, breaks my heart.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers!

She had a WIC apt today and I told them about it. So they checked her head and they think its just fine.

they showed me her charts and said she is measuring and growing as she is supposed to, if the soft spot was closing to early we'd be able to see a stop in growth on the chart. Im still taking her to the specialist but boy do I feel soooo much better after talking to them!!

Great news! That can be scary. We had friends whose 4 month old had to have the surgery, his was closing too early, he is now a healthy, normally irritating teenager...lol!!
