Do you have scratch mittens for your newborn? BTDT moms, did you use them?

The reason I ask, in my breastfeeding class last night the nurse said not to use them. She said babies want to have their hands on their face and in their mouth, that they don't want mittens on. But I don't want her scratching up her face! She said any scratches will heal quickly and not to worry about that, but I don't know. What are your thoughts on this?

We didn't use them last time because of the same advice from our class! And I have to say she DID always have her hands in her mouth and she loved scratching/feeling different textures right off the bat.

It can be terrifying to cut their nails the first few times, but it gets easier. (And really, you might as well get used to it because you'll be doing it for the next 8 years lol) DD did get some scratches, but squirt some breastmilk on them and they will go away by the next day

All my nephews were always having their hands in their faces. We One time Joshua scratched himself bad enough he started bleeding. They were okay about keeping them on. But they are kinda loose so they fall off.

I am going to get a few pair of mittens just to be safe because I dont want Samantha to do the same, I would probably cry if she made herself bleed. If she keeps them on then great.

I have three pairs, I believe, but as a FTM who knows what I'll actually use.

Had them, but didn't use them. I did however use the built in mittens that come on some of the outfits - where applicable. Either way, I really didn't have any issues with DD scratching her face at all.

I got some from a friend for the girls, so I'll try them but if I have to adapt and not use them, I'll adapt

I just remembered this.....most newborns nails are paper thin and flimsy. Someone told me they bit the nails instead of clipping. At the time I thought she was nuts and said I woul never do it. Well in the end I ended up doing it because the clippers and flie were such a pain.

I agree, never used them. I think its good for their hands to be free, and if they do scratch themselves it heals super fast. The nails are really bendy so a lot of people like to file instead of clip. They make little glass files you can get at CVS and places like that and they are really gentle.

I bought a 4-pack and have them ready to go in case. I'm definitely not opposed to using them, and I got them because I was a major scratcher so I wanted to be prepared! Guess I really freaked my mom out in those first couple days of life, as I allegedly was on a mission to gouge my cheeks out as a newborn!

I used them MAYBE once with my first. There are some newborn long sleeve onesies that have them built in, though, so if I felt the whim to do it, I would just use one of those. lol

You can also just use baby socks, they work just as well.

I used them sometimes while he slept, but he preferred to be swaddles so it wasnt very often. I remember feeling so guilty when he had scratched across his eye and nose I dont know if I will use them this time, I wont be buying any. I do have some outfits with the fold down mittens on the sleeves.

My sister did this and swears by it... no scratches, no worry about cutting their little fingers!
