I thought I started my first AF postpartum on Thursday, but I stopped bleeding completely yesterday. Today I woke up and have been soaking through a "super plus" tampon and overnight "super absorb" pad every hour or so. I've had a headache all day and have felt cold, but didnt know if I should be concerned or if this is normal even though I had the baby Nov 21!

I finally got up the nerve to call, because I didn't want to call and have it be nothing...
The recording says "if you think you have an emergency please hold and we will transfer you to the answering service" ....I held and a girl answered I told her what was going on and she said "I don't take after hours emergency calls for dr Pou"....I said "the office numbered transferred me here" and she goes "yes but it's for doctors offices and such". When i was still prego I called the Saturday after I was in the hospital having contractions with a medication question and they took all my information and had someone call me back right away. All she told me was I could go to the ER if I'm that concerned...

Am I THAT concerned? Should I be? I was concerned enough to call but not sure if I'm concerned enough to go out on unsalted snowy roads and pay a $300 copay!

That's pretty crappy of them...really what's the point in having an answering service if they just tell u to go to ER...I, too, do not have any advice but it does sound like a lot of bleeding...could u call one of those urgent care places? Of course it would be on the weekend when most offices ate closed...do U have a nurse friend or someone who may be more familiar to ask? Sorry I'm no help

Postpartum bleeding: How much is too much? - MayoClinic.com

This part in particular is relevant :

"If you soak a pad — front to back, side to side — in an hour, go to bed. If the bleeding continues at the same rate after you've rested or you pass clots larger than golf balls, call your health care provider or return to the hospital."

Yeah it's bright red!

Thank you!!! I didn't get any paperwork but I remember him telling me if I soaked through a pad within a hour to come in...just didnt know if applied this long after.

I've laid down and propped my feet up and it seems to have helped. Hoping its much better by bedtime or tomorrow

Yes I believe it still applies as tears & other bleeding can happen even though they are less common now. When I was pregnant w/ Phoenix I went to get an ultrasound done and got delayed because a woman was bleeding badly long after giving birth & needed emergency US. You're probably fine but better safe than sorry. Can you go to urgent care tomorrow if it hasn't let up? They are much cheaper! Hope you feel better soon.

Yes, my dr and the nurses said if you are soaking through a pad an hour for more than 2-3 hours, the dr needs to know.

Hmm. try to take it easy tonight and I'd go in tomorrow if it isnt any better. Have you tried calling the hospital you delivered at? I bet they could tell you how concerned you should be.

I'm going to call in the morning, its let up some - but not all the way. I'm not in any pain, just feel dizzy and kind of lightheaded but that could be because my blood pressure is low...which is probably because my Dr. has me on blood pressure medicine still from the high blood pressure when I was prego a month ago!!!!

For real though...I called up to L&D just to see if I should be concerned and was told "If you're concerned go to the ER"....my Dr office was closed today bc of the holiday...booo!

The Dr here has been great...the nurses are compete morons though. They needed a urine sample and asked if I was bleeding...."Yes..." Then asked of I was bleeding a lot "YES! That's why I'm here!" ...wish they'd look at my file before trying to take care of me.

Did an ultrasound everything is good except a cyst on my left ovary. Took my blood count and it was a little low and I'm anemic. Then did a pelvic exam and cleaned out clots...he said I should be good in a few days! No more big surprises he said.

Best part...nurse was gonna cath me for a ursine sample and he told her no! PRAISE THE LORD!

Getting sent home with birth control pills and Morton :-)
