I want to teach Connor 4 main things and i figured 3 months is a decent time to start (yes i know it will probably be a while before he actually uses them) problem is i dont know how to teach them
I want him to be able to convay "im hungry" "im sleepy" "im dirty" & "I like this" i think these are important things for him to be able to tell me as well as for him to be self aware of I think it will make transitioning to independence later much easier if he has allready learned to be self aware.
my first issue is what words to use I dont know which ones are the easyiest for him to learn do i teach hungery, milk, eat, feed, food ect I want to use ones that he can learn the earliest possiable but also ones that make sense.
and my second is how to teach it do i use the sign instead of the word/ sign while saying the word/ only sign during the situation/do i manipulate his hands/arms so he also signs or only show him the sign.
I think the best words to teach babies are milk, water, eat, diaper, more, bath, and sleep. These words mean something to them. Basically, when you feed him you would say milk and sign milk. Sign diaper when changing his diaper and so on. You don't have to manipulate his hands to make the signs but you can. They will imitate when they are ready.
Always say the word and sign at the same time. Most of all, have fun with it. They always let us know what they need one way or another.
My SIL taught my niece signs and she started using them around 9 or 10 months I believe. She is really using them now at 15 months. She signed and said the word at the same time. The one I see used most is "more", which is putting the thumb and fingers together with the palm facing up. SO CUTE lol
hm, I use milk and Milch (german for milk ) just naturally... hadn't really thought about whether or not it was a good word to use lol
Savina has been signing "hungry" to me for weeks already though, so I'm happy with that right now I'm trying to get her to respond, when I ask her "milk?" ... I'd love to get her to sign "hungry" to me when I ask her that, or not (when she's not hungry).
The way she signs to me is this: she'll put her hand to her mouth, sometimes in an upleading motion from the belly, but sometimes from far out. It's so bloody cute!
Unfortunately she only signs about 75% of the time. When she's too hungry, she'll just cry. And sometimes she'll cry and desperately sign "hungry" to me at the same time, with a quicker motion.
