Those first smiles are the best! I feel like most of those first weeks/months are all give, give, give and then finally we get something in return with those first little sweet smiles.
James started consistently socially smiling pretty young at 3 weeks although my kids and FIL swore at them he smiled at 2 weeks, but I think they probably mistook a sleep smile as a social one. Penny was young too at 3 1/2 weeks and Jack smiled socially at around 4-5 weeks old.
I bet he's socially smiling, especially if his smile is in response to something you do. James smiles when I sing to him while smiling or when the kids play with him.

B also started smiling pretty early, around 3 weeks old. I love it! Both of my girls didnt smile until 6 wks old, when "the books" say they should smile. So I like B is doing it a little early.

He does it when I read to him or "dance" with him or even just talk to him. I'm pretty sure it's social. I think DH is just jealous that he smiles more for me, lol.
gardenbelle and Gripstress like this.

she does! it's still not as consistent as it will be soon. I don't know if she really knows why she is smiling, but man, when she gives me that huge open mouth smile, it makes my day! i get so excited when that big grin shows up.

What's with the gas smiles thing anyway? My babies don't smile with gas...I do though haha They smile while dreaming at first but not gas. Anyway, you know a good response smile when you see it...they are awake, you give em a kiss or smile at them or do something they like and get a smile. I agree dh is jealous hehe

I think I got my first real smile yesterday, even if DH says its still too early to be real... But when I went to get her out of the pack 'n play yesterday morning she had been fussing but as soon as I leaned over she got the biggest smile and she was looking right at me. So I'm telling myself it was real. Totally melted my heart, too, so sweet!

Aubree's been smiling since we were still in the hospital. I didn't get to see her first smile. Mike had been holding her and I was in the bathroom. I was so upset that I missed it, but there have been plenty more since. She smiles all the time. I love baby smiles because there's just something about the fact that they have no teeth and all you see is gums when they smile, I love it lol.

Awesome about the first smile, Cassie! I just read a few weeks ago that span of the average age that newborns smile is really huge - between 2 weeks and 3 months so it's definitely not too early!
