So I donít know about the rest of you, but Iím feeling LESS than on top of current events lately. Iím ashamed to admit that news has become a total last priority to me these days, and Iím lucky if I can convince my 3 year old to turn off Pocoyo long enough to make sure that the world isnít planning on blowing up in the coming day.

So I was thinking Ė what about a current events thread? Every day, we can talk about some daily news topic and share our thoughts. Obviously, we CANNOT let this become a debate thread. But I think it would be nice to have a daily new item to share amongst ourselves. Thoughts?

Well, jumping right in - So what do you think about the pope quitting his job? Crazy, huh? This is the first time in 600 years that this has happened.

I find it interesting and had to have DH explain to me why they always pick popes that are "long in tooth".
I find it very interesting that he would resign now, during such an important time for the Catholic church (lent, Easter and all that.) I think I read he plans to be gone completely as of Feb. 28th

I think this thread is a great idea Maggie! I am so behind on current events and news. To prove that point....the pope quit?!?! I didn't even know that was possible! The world gets crazier every day.

Great idea! The way I find out about my news now is from Kelly & Michael or The View lol.

I have to say I was surprised to hear about the pope but I'm not Catholic so I really don't know too much about the pope and how that all works. But the fact that he was the first in 600 years is interesting. Makes me wonder if there is another reason he's stepping down.

Did that really happen, Crystal? Craziness! I guess he cited his declining health as the reason for stepping down, Cassie, but I think Brittany makes a good point about the timing. When my husband told me (see...this is why I need a current events thread) I asked, "What did he fall in love with a nun or something?"

Why DO they pick popes that are so "long in the tooth" Brittany? Can you share your DH's explanation - because I've always wondered that as well. (Or any other JM catholic mommy please help me here.) I mean, I know that they have to pick someone with a certain amount of experience - but it seems like SOMEONE would have that experience at a younger age. Perhaps this will spur them on to choose a younger candidate this time. You know, like someone who is 70 instead of in his 80's. (Or a - gasp - WOMAN?! Hee...I know that's just wishful thinking. But I think a Popess would be pretty freaking cool.)

I thought they were always "experienced" because they stayed the pope until they died. Obviously, I am wrong. I really didn't think it was "allowed" for them to step down. Do we have any Catholic mommies to help educate us?
I am with Maggie- Popess has my vote.

LOL IKWYM about being behind the times with current events. It's sad! I listen to NPR a lot while driving and I usually can get little snippets here and there but that is all. The news is too violent to turn on while the kids are around and if I'm spending time on the computer, I'm here or on the FB JM group! The good old newspaper? Hah. I barely have time to sort through it to find the coupons.

The way DH explained it to me (and he's not Catholic, so he could be wrong), is that there are certain requirements, as far as number of years in the Church, for every position (priest, bishop, etc.) and by the time you fill all the requirements for Pope, you're in your 80's, usually.
I don't really understand it.

Ah! I guess that makes sense. It seems a bit illogical to delineate a specific amount of time that an individual must be in each position - but then again a lot of catholic dogma doesn't make much sense to me. (No offense intended to our catholic JM mommies.)
