Elijah just does not want to wean. I'm having a difficult time doing it... seems more difficult than with my first three (who weaned shortly after turning one). Any tips for weaning an older one-year-old?

I think they are probably more difficult to wean as they get older but I think the more he has other things to occupy himself and gets more independent, the easier it will be. He probably just loves his cuddle time with mommy

I agree... I think it gets more difficult with age... I didn't realize that before! I've tried just holding him and not breastfeeding and he cries a lot. I don't want to make him angry about it.

LOL, thank you.

He has a cold right now, but as soon as he is better, I'm really going to just have to hold firm, or he won't stop.

How is that cold? Any better I hope. One of my daughters that lives far away has an infection that turned into MRSA!!! Its been so hard for her to get better. My heart is wanting to be with her. Iwant to hold her so bad but my O.B. said, 'No way!" So hold Elijah and enjoy before he grows up. I miss that with my older babies so much

Elijah is just about over the cold... I'm just getting it! Sigh. He is still breastfeeding all night and trying to all day! I think my milk supply is dropping from the days where we are out all day (and not breastfeeding) so he does it for shorter times.

We are now down to one feeding per day! He does a bedtime feeding and is now sleeping through the night! Lots of progress.

I was wondering how you were doing with him. Glad you are making progress Particularly that he is sleeping thru the night now. I don't know how you survived this long.

awwl! I figured by now it was all over. You poor brave soul! lol I guess he really needed it and what a good mommy you are for not doing a "cold turkey" kind of intervention. I imagine you are sooo done tho.

Not that it matters, but why was it so important to you to wean him? There are lots of people, myself included, who nurse well into toddlerhood. I'm not saying that is what anyone SHOULD do, but I would hate for anybody to feel like they had to wean at the one year mark because that was what was expected. There are tons of benefits for mom and baby to nursing beyond that point. I'm glad the weaning process is going more smoothly for you now. And this post is in no way to make you feel guilt over weaning when you did- it just kind of irks me when people act like it is a huge deal for a mom to continue nursing beyond a year, and I felt like I had to say something as a mom who DOES nurse well beyond the one year mark.

He has a cold, so is trying to breastfeed throughout the day, again. I don't want to tell him no, but I don't want to let him and have to wean all over again!

Doremi, I have to admit there was pressure by extended family members to wean. I prefer to wean at one, but Elijah needed it longer.

It makes me sad that you had so much external pressure regarding weaning him. I have talked to many moms over the years, and almost all of them say their little BOYS are the ones who want to nurse the longest. My experience has been that when they are ready to wean, it is a quick and easy process, and that if you try to push it too soon, they try to nurse even more. I would probably have nursed him while he was sick, while talking about how when he felt better you were going to put your milk away. I thought my oldest would never wean, and then he quit cold turkey one day, telling me my milk didn't taste good anymore! If you want to nurse, don't let anybody stop you. Especially since you are still well within the guidelines established by the world health organization.
