They hurt, mostly when you poop (especially if you are very constipated or, interestingly enough, if you have diarrhea). Some are on the inside and others are on the outside. If you have external hemorrhoids, you can look with a mirror and see. It will look swollen, sometimes like a little sac and they usually feel soft to the touch, though they can get hard if they get a clot in them.
Don't be afraid to look with a mirror. And don't worry about being TMI.
