What are you reading related to pregnancy, birth, labor, and post-partem?

I think you are too kind. Kind people give the people around them a hard time. You can't express yourself honestly, because you are worried about hurting other people's feelings, and that makes you miserable.~"Winter Sonata"

Has anyone read Sexy Birth? I am interested! I'm also interested in a good, pregnancy devotional. One of my very favorite books that I read during a pregnancy that's *kinda* about birth was The Midwife's Song: A Story of Moses' Birth.

BTW~I HATED The Red Tent! I couldn't handle the ritual in field....

I loved Belly Laughs. Jenny McCarthy has sometimes been a bit vulgar for my tastes on tv, but her book is pretty conservative (for her) and HILARIOUS.

I doubt I'll read anything this time. I feel like I've got this on lock down.

I've been reading the pregnancy bible which my best friend lent me, that one i liked so far.
I was given Ina May's book on childbirth, my cousins wife said she liked how it calmed her for the labour.
I just got the book from the OBs office about pregnancy and newborns that the ministry gives out.
I picked up a book called the baby's nurse bible or something.. it was on sale for super cheap that one had some good questions and answers, it iwas written by a RN who delievers babies.
I also picked up You having a baby by dr oz only because it was super cheap too.. That book bored me to tears. Couldn't finish it at all!! it was too much information, to get to the information for me.

i grabbed those books before i was given the other books.

I am reading "Pushed : the painful truth about childbirth and modern maternity care." It's very

eye-opening.

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth (Ina May Gaskin) was a good read. I read that with my second.

I am currently reading When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets & Quads (Dr. Barbara Luke), and it has some good info. It's written by an OB, so some of the stuff is a bit biased (like she doesn't think you should ever see a midwife with multiples and even discourages a regular OB, and thinks should be seeing a high risk doc from the start).

I LOVE pushed, but it's hard to read for some people because of all the medical terminology. I used to have my CBE students read it but some of them really struggled, so now I just recommend it. I give it to any doula client that hires me.

What? Why no What to Expect? I think it's a good read.....though I do take a few things in there with a grain of salt, but for the most part it's pretty informative....oh well, to each her own . The only thing that does scare me in any book is reading about episiotomies (sp?). If anyone would want to stop me in my tracks and cripple me down, all they would have to do is say that word. *shudder* I'm sure it's just like if a guy thinks about being kicked in the downstairs.....

I'm not reading much else but What to Expect. I started reading Belly Laughs, but I stopped about half way through.....Everyone said it was side-splitting, but I didn't think it was. It was cute, but it didn't make me LOL....more like SALTS (smiled a little then stopped)

Personally, I think Dr Oz is a quack.

Well maybe not a complete quack, he's just another Dr with his own opinion, and people follow him like is a god or something....as if his word is a be-all-end-all. There's a woman in my office who doesn't do ANYTHING unless Dr Oz thinks it's a good idea. It's always Dr Oz this or Dr Oz that....I swear if I hear it ONE MORE TIME

I only have watched 1 thing of his, it was a 3 am show and nothing else was on. I think it was about woman and cancer, anyways something he said got me so pissed off that I ended up changing the channel after 5 minutes. I've managed to avoid any type of talk show thing hes on since.
I saw that the book was $5 and i was like sweeeeeeeeeet a cheap pregnancy book.... But part of the reason I didn't like the book is he kinda makes females like me that are overweight into some disgusting unhealthy pig. Where as other books are seemingly alot nicer.

I think what to expect wayyyyy over medicalizes birth and makes it to be this big scary ordeal that we *might* survive if we have every medical intervention possible. It makes my skin crawl lol. I do think its okay to reference but in general I hate it. I have like 20 copies of it in our recycling box because If I see it at a garage sale or goodwill or something I nab it up to protect pregnant women everywhere
