Hey! So I am writing this for my SIL who is pregnant and a member of the DD for April. She is super high risk due to underlying health problems. But tonight she is in the ER because of bright red gushing blood and contractions. She is 23 weeks-due April 23rd- They are monitoring her. After 3 hours, they decided to time them and instead of giving her an IV, they are just having her drink water in case she is dehydrated. So she has been there for around 5 hours now and they are saying all her bleeding is coming from a "friable Cervix" now I looked up the term. It means your cervix is extremely sensitive and will bleed from a slight touch or rub (like when you walk, have sex, exercise) pretty much anything. BUT everything I can find on the matter also says women already know about their "Friable Cervix" because they bleed between periods and after sex. Well- this is my SIL's 15th pregnancy. She has no living children, so you can all understand how much this pregnancy means to her and to the rest of the family. The hospital has not examined her cervix or done an ultrasound- The reason for my post is to find out if there is anyone on the board in the DD April who is spotting/gushing etc and has been diagnosed with a "friable cervix" When she texted me and told me that, I was doubtful, still am. I am hoping she will get a second opinion.

any comments/concerns/info is very much appreciated!
Thanks Ladies!

I personally don't have it. I would definitely get a second opinion though! The least they should do is an ultrasound and a pelvic check. I am so sorry that she is having this happen.

Thank you *kiliki* for my beautiful siggy!

I don't have a friable cervix, but wanted to send hugs to you and prayers for her and the family.

I don't have a friable cervix. I have an incompetent cervix. I have had a cerclage with all 3 of my pregnancies. I usually end up spotting a couple times along the way too. Both my previous pregnancy I have dilated and effaced without any bleeding.

I wish her the best and would def look into a second opinion.

If she is bleeding, I would think a pelvic exam could introduce bacteria? (similar to when in labour)...I don't know anything about it, but sending her healing and baby stay vibes, that is very scary.

I don't have this and have never heard about it, but definitely think that she needs to have a second opinion! I hope everything turns out okay for her and the baby.

Okay so I had it this pregnancy. I never had it my first one, had no pain, spotting, nothing between periods. I literally had no idea anything was going on until I ended up in emergency at 11 weeks with massive bleeding. I bled for about a week then nothing. This entire time.

Here's how the doctor there explained it to me. Im just going off of memories.....He said that it had nothing to do with pregnancy since it can happen anytime to anyone. It was a gynecological issue, not pregnancy related. He told me that it CAN be caused by abnormal cells on the cervix, STDs, or PID, but in his experience the majority of people he runs across with it have none of these issues. I had none and no experience with cervical bleeding in the past.

He said that hes never seen it cause problems in the pregnancy but if it does flare up and bleed a lot they might have to cauterize or stop the bleeding sometimes. Apparently sometimes it can erode a bit into the cervix and burst a blood vessel. So it is really important to keep an eye on the amount of bleeding. Heavy bleeding could cause problems for mom and baby if not dealt with due to simple blood loss.....

I resumed regular activity the day after my hospital visit just no sexual activity, running, heavy work etc. for about 4 weeks just because it was scary as heck. He never told me to do that though....he said it wouldnt hurt me but might extend or aggravate the bleeding. And he did tell me the same thing as your SIL, that pretty much anything can aggravate it. Like I said, I havent had any more problems BUT I fully expect to have a lot of bleeding during labour since Im sure it will piss off my cervix to no end!!

Good luck to your SIL!! If she or you have any questions feel free to pm me.

I was just in the hospital for this exact reason New Years Eve. I had severe bleeding and contractions every 2 minutes apart. They determined that I have a friable cervix and had me drink water. Since then they have put me on pelvic rest.
