Hi All - I have been lurking here for a few weeks since getting a BFP on June 28. Hubby and I have been together for 11 years and married for 3. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in March and worked really hard to drop 35 lbs and get all my readings under control. I had a Dr's appt with my wonderful endocronologist on June 14 and she said we were all clear to start trying - well I O'd on the 18th and voila!
As I am Diabetic (although well controlled with diet and exercise and a sm dose of metformin) I was immediately referred to the High Risk Unit. I had my first appointment today and she was awful. She made a comment "you must be educated, you are asking so many questions" before telling us that she had already spent too much time with me. She told me if I planned to manage my Diabetes in pregnancy the same way as when not pregnant (diet, exercise, little amount of drugs) then I was going to FAIL (she kept using that word). I know that at some point I will have to go on insulin towards the middle-end of the pregnancy, but for now my numbers have been fine and I am eating well despite the nausea (and the carb cravings). I just felt awful after leaving... like I was stupid for even getting pregnant and putting the baby at risk. Hubby was a huge support and confirmed she came off really cold and ignorant - she was truly a wretched woman. She had me in tears by the end of it.
I left without even having the chance to speak about a pain on my right side I have been having since this morning. The dietician I met with after explained that the clinic does not do "obstetric" care, only monitoring my diabetes, so I would have to speak to my GP about the pain anyway.
So we left and called my GP's office, who is awesome and saw me an hour later. He is going to check in to see if I can see another Doctor in the clinic for the remainder of the pregnancy, which I am grateful for, but sent me for an u.s tomorrow to rule out an ectopic.... I was so excited for today (my first appt!) and it has been so awful....
Has anyone had an ectopic, the pain I have is only a 5-6 on a scale of 10 and feels a lot like the pain when I ovulate... I figured at 8 weeks it would be much more painful than this if it was ectopic?

That's terrible. I hope you can find someone else to work with, but if you don't, get in and out as fast as you can and talk to your GP about everything else. Congrats on your BFP and good for you for losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle. Diabetic or not, you're already being a good momma. Hope your pain goes away soon.

I am sorry that you had such an awful experience. I pray that you will find the right doctor for you and Baby. No doctor should ever go to that length to tell you, "that they spent too much time with you". That is their dang job! She might of been having a bad day, God forbid she treats all of her patients like that. Hope you are feeling better soon. *HUGS*

Pregnancy and birth are a momentous time in one's life, and you deserve to have a care provider who honors that and treats you with respect. I hope you can find someone who can do that. Sometimes they seem to forget that we're paying them to do a service for us and let arrogance take over, you don't need to tolerate anything less than mutual trust and respect during such a life changing time. Good luck!

I am so sorry you were subjected to this hostility, she should not be a medical provider. Good luck finding an awesome Dr who is caring and respects you as a patient; they are out there so just keep looking.

Oh no!! I can't stand being treated badly by medical professionals. I'm definitely a doctor 'shopper'. I will find someone that I can work with even if it takes me awhile. I'm very glad to hear that you won't be seeing her again. How awful.

As far as ectopic, at 8 weeks, that little guy is almost an inch. I would think you would've have had problems before now if it was? I hope everything goes great at the ultrasound!

Urgh sorry you had such a crappy appointment, if it were me id seriously consider making a complaint. I hope you can find someone else that's more understanding.

Your gp sounds great, glad they were able to get you in quickly. I don't have anything to add re the ectopic, I just hope all is well with your little one!

Thanks Ladies - just back from the ultrasound and everything is perfect. Measuring 7 weeks and 2 days which matches up exactly with when I was certain I O'd and heart beat was 151. The ultrasound tech was really nice and explained that the right ovary was the one that had made the egg and so the pain I was feeling was likely the end of the follicle that released the egg - so happy there is a simple explanation!

I'm so sorry about your bad appointment! I don't have type II but as soon as I get pregnant my sugars go through the roof. I'm already on insulin for fasting numbers and have to follow the strict diet. You can do it! Some doctors just don't understand! I hope you can find someone new to help with the diabetes part! If you ever want to talk or compare notes or ideas let me know

So glad to hear the U/S was wonderful! YAY!

My spouse is a doctor, so when I hear things like this.. I just shudder. I'm so sorry you had a crap doctor, and I would definitely see about switching. NO doctor should be telling you you'll fail, or that you're asking too many questions. They get PAID to answer those questions.

I'm so glad everything was perfect with the ultrasound and baby, though!

Lurking from the June 2013 playroom. First, congrats on your BFP and getting your diabetes under control! Second, I'm sorry your appointment was so crappy. Definitely be sure that you get a referral to someone that appreciates that you ask questions and that you are educated about your health, your pregnancy, and your unborn baby's health. She sounds like a complete failure as a doctor. There is no reason that both you and your baby can't be healthy through your entire pregnancy. Again, congrats! And hopefully the next doctor you get in with is much better!
