DH called earlier to tell me he got the news today that he is going to deploy next year for sure. He got the option (which doesn't usually happen) to go early versus later b/c of the baby. It's 6 months, but he can pick if he wants to go in late April/early May or wait till August. Early, he will be back for Christmas, but late he will be able to have us in VA for the summer before he goes. Ugh, only 6 more years of this. Even when I know it's coming, it still sucks to get the news. Part of me always fantasizes that we'll get a break and he won't have to go b/c of draw downs. Sigh. No such luck.

Does he know where he is deploying yet? I did three years in the army and five in the national guard- I deployed one time to Texas. I wish the people with families had it so easy- I was a single girl at the time. Is he picking early or late? I would vote send him early so that your baby gets to know him when she is really alert and soaking in the world around her.

Yes ma'am. Afganistan. We are thinking the same way you are, probably Early. This will be his 4th deployment and he's been away for the holidays twice before. He really doesn't want to do that again, and I can't blame him. Like you, I'm thinking he will get back right about the time the baby is really becoming more aware of who the key players are.

Awww, I'm sorry girl!! At least they are letting him choose....and I agree about him choosing early so when he comes back the baby will be getting to know him....whereas if he left later, she'd get to know him and then he'd leave and that would be so sad

Chris is deploying in March, so if the baby comes early (if his lungs are developed) he would be leaving when the baby is 4ish weeks old. If the lungs aren't developed and we have to wait on the induction Chris will get even less time with him. It sucks. He was going to do 6 months but they are letting him do a 3 month instead and then he'll deploy again a few months after he gets home. Rinse and repeat for the next 14 years.

I always hate deployments on new and expectant moms. I agree with him deploying earlier, for the same reason the girls already said. HUGS Mama! I say at least he'll be here for the birth. I have friends who have delivered while their husbands were in Afghanistan.

Beth, I'm sorry Chris is being deployed so soon. If he chose a longer deployment, could he stay home longer?

That stinks! I'm glad you guys know ahead of time at least, and that he can choose when to go.

No, if he did a 6 month he'd still be home for 2-3 months before leaving again.

So sorry to hear that. You are such a strong woman. I know you can get past this hurdle, too. Thank you and Beth for your great sacrifices.

I'm sorry I know how tough it is, my DH has to deploy in 2013 for a year to afghanistan and he is gone most of the time now because he's been on the border mission since September and they just extended him until the end of next year

For the moms of the hubby's deploying- is there any chance of them getting a permanent placement such as Germany or even stateside? For the MN national Gaurd some of the guys skipped deploying and instead worked on the base full time doing background work to keep things running.

I'm sorry
The early option does seem like the best choice.

That is such a difficult decision to make. My best friend's husband is in the Army and has been deployed many times. I am amazed at how wives of military husbands do it! My hat is off to you!

Chris can't NOT deploy. He's a flier on a reconn. plane. There is no work for him unless he is deployed. We can go overseas, but he'd still deploy. His work is in war zones, not in places we could live.
