I had my NT Scan and genetic counseling today. The doctor (a perinatalogist) was awesome. Sat down with us and went over the general risks for women over 35 and then said he believes it's more accurate to look at the patient's individual risks and not just label us all "high risk". He even called me a "young lady" several times. Seriously, I could've kissed him.

He said based on the NT measurement the risks that this baby has Downs syndrome are much lower than the 1 in 140 or something like that for my age. He said that goes up to like 1 in 400-something due to the measurement. Plus there was an obvious nasal bone (or whatever) so that lowers the risk even more. He said usually with a baby with any of the trisomy issues there will be developmental issues this early on and the scan didn't show any so that's good. He then went over the risks of CVS and amnio and said with the new non-invasive DNA blood testing there's very little need to do those (since their accuracy is quite high with very low false positive rates). I had the MaterniT21 (one of those tests) done while there too.

It was a great appointment and we saw the baby quite a bit. He/she (though I kept saying "she") laid very still for most of it and then started waving her arms after awhile. The tech was thrilled with how easy she was to scan.

The best part is I should get the results of the MaterniT21 back in 7 days!!!! He said to call Thursday of next week and ask just in case I don't hear sooner. I can't believe I'll know the gender so soon. Amazing.

That's awesome. Yeah I was sent to the perintologist, but not because of my age. They really don't consider over 35 much of a high risk unless you have other issues (which I do though which is why I have to go). So I'm glad they consider you a young lady

I don't feel old that's for sure. I always thought 35 was an odd cut off and it was nice to hear a doc explain why that rules exists and why it's losing favor.

I tried to post a pic but it kept showing up huge. Ugh.

Nope! I'm happy either way. My girls though are split - my oldest wants a boy and the youngest wants a girl. So I guess one of them will be disappointed.

I feel the same way about gender. Happy either way!
My daughter desperately wants a sister though.
And my husband wants another boy. Somebody in house is gonna be disappointed too

My DS really wants a baby brother! I keep thinking it's a girl and kind of hope it is but I'll be happy if it's just a healthy baby!
