We don't talk about it because it makes those that have never experienced uncomfortable. It is one of the worst outcomes a parent can imagine, and as a result it makes people uncomfortable. People avoid things that make them uncomfortable. Also, people can't imagine what it is like and they don't know what to say to one of us that has been through it, so in a lot of cases they say nothing. These are just generalizations that I've experienced/deduced along the way, and there are always exceptions.
