I gained 43lbs during pregnancy. At my 4 weeks appointment I was from 173.2lbs at delivery to 152.4lbs. At my 6 week appointment I went down to 150.2 so only lost another 2lbs. Well my pap smear was abnormal so went back at 9 weeks and I gained the 2 lbs back..so I'm at 152lbs. I'm breastfeeding, eating at least 2 big meals (I try to get breakfast in there) and I'm snacking between lunch and dinner and an hour or two after dinner. Typically only having 90-100 calorie packs; f snacks. Why am I gaining weight? Everyone says I look great and gives me crap when I say I still have 15-20lbs to lose of pregnancy weight because to them I'm thin enough.

This is me at 4 week appointment at 152.4

This is about 6 weeks

THen this at 8 weeks.... shirt doesn't help I know

Why am I gaining weight and what "diets" are safe for breastfeeding?

i feel your pain. i lost about 10-15 that first week pp then i have been at a stand still ever since! and actually this past week i gained almost 3 lbs. ugh, its so frustrating. im ebf'ing and i eat okay (not great but trying to watch it) and i've started working out a little, nothing crazy just 20 min workouts a few days a week. i think we might be retaining water w/ breastfeeding? not sure but i heard other moms say that might be a reason. as for safe diets, weight watcher's is a good option since it factors in breastfeeding, you get like 14 (i think) extra points a day

Have either of you tried tracking calories on a program like my fitness pak or Livestrong?

Your body burns 20 calories to produce 1ounce of milk. So if you baby eats avg of 25 ounces a day you burn abiut 500 calories producing milk.

3,500 calories = 1 lb. to lose a pound a week, you need a500 calorie daily deficit.

The simple way to figure what your daily needs is to multiply you current weight by 10 and add 500 So teresa to maintain your weight 2,000. To lise apound a week -1,500. If you exercise, add the calories burned to your daily needs.

Yup, weight watchers! It's so easy and I'm such a huge WW advocate! Myself, DH, my Mom, and both FIL and MIL are on WW. You can eat anything you want, there's no restrictions, no crazy diet foods or gimmicks, just portion control and counting your points. They do give a lot of extra points for breast feeding so you never feel hungry, no starving yourself....it's just awesome!

Thank you for this. I really should start counting calories. MIL is doing a 7 day diet with cabbage soup...I won't join her but I will join her in eating more fruits and veggies as I don't eat quite enough of those!
