Never had a baby before so I am wondering whats happening at the first appointment. I haven't had it yet, its on Wednesday. I am currently 6 weeks. I just don't know what to expect, what do you do? I appreciate the details might be different for different countries but I am sure the general idea would be similar! Please tell me so I know! :-)

Typically they draw blood, do a urinalysis, get some medical/family history on you nadir you are far along enough they will do an ultrasound! Good luck! Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Where I live it depends on if you are using a GP, midwife or OB. I'm from Canada, so I don't know how similar it will be.

If you see a GP on the first appointment they order blood tests (prenatal, HIV, syphilis, blood count, ruebella, and a couple other things), urinalysis and a dating ultrasound. After that you go to another clinic for all of those and have another appointment in a couple weeks were you discuss if you want a genetic screening test and family history.

If you see a midwife on the first appointment you talk about your expectations and health to see if you are a right fit for each other. You also talk about family history. Then you have a second appointment to get sent for bloodwork, urinalysis and ultrasound like above.

If you see an OB you go for bloodwork, urinalysis and ultrasound before you see the OB. The OB gives you a pelvic exam, may do another ultrasound (depends on the clinic) and talks about your history and screening.

I've called around a lot... haha.

I just had an appointment at 6 weeks, 3 days. I got a lot of information about diet and exercise, got a baseline weight and blood pressure. I also had a pelvic exam. I got a requisition to get bloodwork done (which I did today). They don't do ultrasounds in the office, which I was really disappointed about. I had to schedule another appointment for that, which means I have to wait another 1.5 weeks since it's the only time hubby and I are both off.

It seems like everyone's experience is different depending on where you go. It seems to me almost everyone got an ultrasound at their first appointment, but I didn't...

Good luck!!

With my OB typically we do initial bloodwork, go over basic medical history etc, and have an u/s to find a h/b.

My first appt. I see the rn, go over history, and get given info on diet, exercise. My second appt will be with the midwife, they will further discuss history, my wants as far as pregnancy and birthing go, a pelvic exam and an US.
